Edward Wade (1745-1776) was the son of Robert Wade Sr. and Elizabeth (Hampton) Wade, named in his 1767 will: ROBERT WADE, 250a, NL (p. 79). Goochland Co. on branches of Lickinghole Cr.; Henry Harper's L. 20 Jun. 1733. Will book page 218 WILL OF *ROBERT WADE "..sick of body ... To son Edward Wade my mill & all my land on n.s. of Difficult Creek. ... “ Edward was at this time unmarried, and explains why none of his children were named.

This Edward Wade married Letitia "Letty" Martin in Charlotte County, Virginia, had four children (named in his will) and died at the age of 31.[2]. She was the daughter of Abraham Martin and Elizabeth Marshall.

Edward and Letty's marriage bond was issued on 15 Oct 1768 in Charlotte County, Virginia. Charlotte/Lunenburg counties were known to be home to the Martin family. The family Bible records the wedding on 10 Oct 1769. Letty had been the second-born and only daughter with eight brothers.

Birth order of Edward and Letty's four children is assumed by the sequence in which he named his sons in his will. That daughter Betsy was the youngest is construed from the statement in the will that final sales and settlements should wait until Betsy became 16.

Edward and Letty were married for only seven to eight years before his death, which left Letty with four young children:

1. William
2. Abraham Martin
3. Edward Washington
4. Betsy Marshall

Edward served in the 7th Virginia Regiment, Continental Line. One source says he was reported to have died in 1776 at the Battle of Quebec at age 31, [3] but that cannot be correct if he wrote his will 12 Feb 1776 and the Battle of Quebec was fought on 31 Dec 1775. Another source says he died in Williamsburg. [4]

Since his will was made and proved in Halifax County, Virginia, it is readily assumed that was the family's home when he died. [5]

After his death his widow married again to Charles Edwards.

Will

Edward Wade died after 12 February 1776, when he made his will, and before 19 September 1776 when it was proved.
Edward Wade of Halifax County bequeathed his entire estate to his wife Letty Wade until his daughter Betty Marshall Wade became 16 years old, at which time all of it was to be sold and the money divided equally between his wife Letty, daughter Betty Marshall Wade, and his sons William Wade, Abraham Martin Wade and Washington Wade. None of his children had issue and all apparently were minors, since he instructed his executors Memucan Hunt, William Stokes, William Rawlins and Samuel Perrin to see that his children were educated. Edward Wade signed his will in the presence of Charles Wade, William Wade, P. Moss and Ann Wade.

I Edward Wade of Halifax County being at this time in health and of perfect sense and memory do make constitute and ordain this to be my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say Imprimis I lend to my wife Letty Wade all my estate till my daughter Betsy Wade shall attain to the age of sixteen years at which time I desire that all my estate both real & personal be sold by my executors and who are hereby empowered to make conveyances of such estate and the money deriving by such sale to be equally divided between my wife Letty Wade and my daughter Betsy Marshall Wade my sons William Wade Abraham Martin Wade and Washington Wade and in case my wife or any of my children should die without lawful begotten heir of his or her body then the part of my estate that is hereby allotted to him or her shall be equally divided amongst my surviving children I further desire that my children be educated at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and I do hereby nominate and appoint Memucan Hunt William Stokes William Rawlins and Samuel Perrin to be executors of this my last will and testament revoking and disowning all will or wills by me heretofore made In witness whereof I the said Edward Wade have hereunto set my hand and seal this twelfth day of February in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred & seventy six (signed) Edward Wade Signed sealed and published in presence of Charles Wade Wm Wade P___moss (unreadable) Anne Wade
