About Edwin John McLennan
Known as Jack. Was 6ft 4 1/2 inches in height (193cm) and weighed 114.5kg in his playing days.
Jack was brought up at Takahope. During his early years he worked on the farm there and then at a local sawmill before spending 26 years at Finegand freezing works. For ten years he farmed the family land before shifting to reside in Wwaka where he remained until his death.
He was a talented sportsman; his career started at the age of 17 playing for the Owaka Club before shifting to Balclutha where he achieved South Otago sub-union and Otago honours. He played 23 games for Otago from 1960-62 and his most memorable was the international game against France.
Jack was also a very competent axe-man and travelled all around the Otago and Southland Chopping Circuit competing and won several trophies.
Whitebaiting, fishing and duck shooting were his main pleasures.
He had to take early retirement from work because of ill-health but kept himself busy with a variety of interest; these included doing a bricklaying course at Telford and building his own barbecue and fence along Clark St in Owaka where they lived.
