About Eileen Whitman

Hur Herald (11/19/2015)

Eileen Hamilton Whitman, 96, of Big Chimney WV, departed this world on November 14, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Layton O. Whitman. Born in Grantsville, WV, she was the daughter of the late George W and Losie (Knotts) Hamilton. She was also preceded in death by her brothers William, John, Edward and George, by her sister Naida Ellison, and by her best friend Margaret Lambert.

Eileen is survived by her children Carole (Tom) Curry, Layton (Debbie) Whitman, Elaine (Doug) Quick, Susan (Jim) Zagar, George (Diane) Whitman, Ed Whitman, Anne (Randy) Swiger, Alice Whitman, Rebecca (Ken) Governor, and Mary (Rick) Gillespie; and by 24 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving sisters, Jeannette Bearden and Johanne Carpenter, and sisters-in-law Dorothy and Mary Hamilton.

A 1936 graduate of Grantsville High School, Eileen enjoyed playing baseball and basketball. After receiving teacher certification from Glenville Normal School (now Glenville State College) she taught in a one-room schoolhouse at Little White Oak in Calhoun County. She retired from World Book Educational Products.

She enjoyed learning and teaching throughout her life. Nature, gardening, poetry, literature and philosophy were among her pleasures. In her role as mother, she was a 4-H club leader, Brownie Scout leader, homeroom mother and a member of the PTA.

A wonderful Mother, she created Woogie Bear stories to entertain her children, sewed clothes for her children, and made the best homemade rolls, pies, cobblers and chocolate cake. She objectively observed, but did not complain, and was our personal guide in the lessons of morals, manners, school and life. She was a precious, wise and much-loved person.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, in the chapel of Christ Church United Methodist of Charleston, West Virginia. A time of gathering for family and friends will be one hour prior to the service in chapel and a reception will be held after. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Nature Conservancy, March of Dimes or Easter Seals.
