Elbert M. Hale, son of Charles Hale was born October 6, 1861, in Grayson county, Virginia, and was one of 18 children born in the family. The early part of his life was spent in Virginia. He was united in marriage to Nancy McLean, November 22, 1882. To this union six children were born; two died in infancy. Mr. Hale is survived by his wife and four children; Mrs. Laura King and John Hale, both of Seattle, Wash.; Mrs. Elizabeth Johnstone and Kent Hale, of Alzada, Mont.
E. M. Hale arrived in South Dakota in the year of 1886. He returned and brought his family to Pleasant Valley, near Tilford, S.D. They resided here until 1896. They then moved to the Black Hills where they made their home until in 1907 they settled on their ranch near Alzada, Mont. In his passing the family loses a loving and kind father, and the community a sterling, highly respected pioneer of the west.
