Lucy Jane Vaughan

Daughter of Charles and Rosamond A. (Comer) Hale.

Many persons felt genuine sorrow at the passing of Mrs. Lucy Hale Vaughan, wife of Rev. T. C. Vaughan, whose death occurred about nine o'clock on Friday night, July 5, at her home at Spring Valley. Mrs. Vaughan, who was 78 years of age, had been seriously ill for only about two weeks, although she had been in feeble health for a number of years.

    The deceased woman was undoubtedly one of the best-liked women in Grayson county, and many persons have been heard to say since her passing that she was one of the best of women.  She was the daughter of the late Charles Hale and wife, of Spring Valley, and was a member of a very prominent and influential family.  More than sixty years ago, she and the Rev. Mr. Vaughan were married.

Surviving the deceased woman, in addition to her husband, are one daughter, Mrs. A. J. Porter; and two sons, John R. Vaughan and Marvin Vaughan, all of Spring Valley. Mrs. Lura Harrington, wife of Attorney P. L. Harrington, Independence, and Mrs. Rosamond Whitman, wife of Sidney P. Whitman, of near Wytheville, preceded their mother in death, as had also one or two children in infancy. Also surviving are a half-sister, Mrs. L. H. Ward, Spring Valley, and a step-sister, Mrs. Sallie Cornett, and two foster daughters, Mrs. S. L. Bourne, Spring Valley, and Mrs. Clyde P. Rhudy, Fallville.
Mrs. Vaughan's husband is one of the most widely known men in this entire section, having had connection with many business enterprises and is at the present time president of the First National Bank of Fries. For eight years he was a pastor of the Fries Methodist Church, he having been a local minister for many years. He was the first pastor of the Fries church.
It is doubtful if there is a minister in Virginia who has conducted, or helped to conduct, as many funeral services as has the Rev. Mr. Vaughan. Even though he is now more than 80 years of age, he is still comparatively active, and is still in great demand for funeral services, marriages, church meetings, etc.
Rev. R. G. Farmer, pastor of the Spring Valley circuit, M. E. Church, South, read as a scripture lesson Proverbs 31:10-31, which is filled with praise for a virtuous woman, whose "price is far above rubies". In his remarks, the Rev. Mr. Farmer also called attention to the verse in this passage of scripture which says: "Her husband is known in the gates, " and applied this to the husband of Mrs. Vaughan, who, he said, in effect, is widely known. He also referred to Matthew 9:24, "The maid is not dead, but sleepeth."
Rev. S. S. Boyer, pastor of the Fries Methodist Church, read a lesson from 1 Corinthians15, and talked about the beautiful life of the deceased and her Christian character. He grouped his remarks around the words; "Simplicity, Service and Saintliness," which he said summed up Mrs. Vaughan's earthly career.
Pall bearers were: Wayne and Harold Vaughan, Gwyn and Basil Ward, Robert and Tom Hale Carico, Clifton Rhudy, and Charles Cornett. Many beautiful flowers were carried by a large number of young women.
Burial took place in the family plot in Ebenezer Cemetery.
Among relatives from a distance who were present for the funeral were: Dr. and Mrs. F. C. Bedsaul, of Floyd; Mr. and Mrs. Norman E. Davis, of Marion; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Harrington and P. L. Harrington, Independence, and Miss Willie Cornett and Charles Cornett, of Roanoke.
Many others from distant points, who were related to the deceased or were close friends, were also among the great number of persons who gathered to pay their respects of esteem and sympathy.
