About Elder Peleg Hicks, Sr

GEDCOM Note

Listed in Bassett, "History of Richmond, NH" as one the Hicks group that moved to Richmond from Rehoboth, MA. in the later 1760's or early 1770's , first settling on L. 21, R. 9. (pps 411-12) The births of his first 4 children are recorded in Richmond, NH from Ezra in 1765 to Rosanna in 1775. He evidently left shortly after that as there are no further references in Bassett. He is NOT on the Association Test signers list in 1776, or the Heads of Household School District List of 1789. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- From the "Official History of Guilford, VT": He moved to Guilford from NH, arriving some time after the 1772 census (probably about 1776) and before 1780, when he appears in a list of those responding to a Militia Alarm as a private in Captain Comfort Starr's Co., October 1780 (p 50 & p. 135), in the service of the State of Vermont. (Guilford was much excited and very split at that time between those who preferred the old allegiance to the State of NY and those who supported the upstart independent State of Vermont) ( p. 248) - The 3rd Baptist Church was constituted in 1782, where Rev. Peleg Hicks was its presiding Elder for 18 years until 1800 when he relocated north to Burke, Caledonia Co. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- 1790 Census - Guilford, Windham, VT, p 49 - 1 male over 16 (himself), 2 males under 16 (Comfort & John) & 3 females all ages (he seems to be missing a couple of daughters since evidently none were married yet? unless I'm giving him daughters who actually belonged to Henry Hicks ). (Sons Ezra & Peleg JR also listed separately in Guilford in 1790) 1800 Census - VT, Caledonia, Burke, p. ? - 00101-00101 (Self, wife, John 16, Lucy 21)
