Ephraim is the son of Ephraim Hicks 1665-1737 and Hannah Wells.

Ephraim was married four times and had children by three wives.

He married on 10 Feb 1708 in Rehoboth to Sarah Kingsley, daughter of John Kingsley and Sarah Sabin. They are parents of seven children born in Rehoboth:

  1. Ephraim Hicks III-18 Dec 1708-Bef 1714
  2. Samuel Hicks-Abt 1709
  3. James Hicks-Abt 1711
  4. John Hicks-Elder-10 May 1712-17 Mar 1799/Hannah GGGalusha

After Sarah died about 1727/1728, Rev Ephraim married Joanna Luther on 28 Aug 1728. No children from this union.

Third wife is Eunice Ludden, whom he married about 1733 and there are four children from this union:

  1. Moses Hicks-29 Nov 1734-22 Sep 1822/Mary Goff/Mary Bradford
  2. Mary Hicks-1736
  3. Peleg Hicks-Elder-Abt 1738-1820/Zerviah"Sarah" Jones
  4. Amos Hicks-1738-1816/Mary Carey

Fourth and final wife was Anna Pearce whom Ephraim married after 22 Apr 1749 in Rehoboth and they have four children:

  1. David Hicks-Abt 1750-1827
  2. Oliver Hicks-1752-15 Jan 1837/Ruth Garnsey
  3. Thomas Hicks-1754
  4. Samuel Hicks-1756/Esther Garnsey

After his wives all died he removed to Richmond,Cheshire Co.,NH. and died there.

Note:

Ephraim lived at Swansea & Rehoboth, Mass and probably eventually moved to Richmond, NH. He wore out 4 wives: Sarah Kingsley, Joanna Luther, Eunice Ludden, and Ann Pearce.

Ephraim married 1st, Feb 10, 1708/9 at Swansea, Sarah Kingsley, daughter of John and Sarah (Sabin) Kingsley. She died October 1727 at Rehoboth. They had at least 5 children, four recorded in the Rehoboth Vital Records and one proven by deed transfer.

He married 2nd, Aug 28, 1728 at Swansea, Joanna Luther, daughter of Theophilus and Lydia (Kinnicutt) Luther. She died sometime after Mar 1731/2 when she signed a deed with Ephraim (BCM Deed 21:121) deeding her inherited property to her brother Daniel. There are no known or probable children of this marriage. Her death date is unknown.

The record of his third marriage has not been found, but Eunice _____ died Feb 25, 1748/9 at Rehoboth as the wife of "Deacon Ephraim Hix". Mr. Gayle Hix feels she was Eunice Ludden, daughter of Benjamin and Eunice (Holbrook) Ludden, b Nov 9, 1689 at Weymouth, MA. There appear to have been several children of this marriage, although none were recorded in the Rehoboth VR.

His 4th wife, was Ann Pierce (Int Apr 22, 1749 at Rehoboth). Hodge (p 17) feels she was probably a widow, but offers no clue to her identity. Mr. Gayle Hix feels she was the daughter of Richard Pearce and Susannah Lawton, b. Sept 21, 1725 in Bristol. RI. However the Pearce Genealogy claims that Ann to have married Col. Nathaniel Carey of Bristol. There appear to have been several children of this marriage also. [F. C. Pierce's publication of the Pearce Genealogy has been in question for a number of years.]

The probable identification of the various children of Ephraim by his 3rd wife, Eunice Ludden, and 4th wife, Ann Pearce and their probable birth dates as given in this file are made by Mr. Gayle Hix based on his deeds research in New Hampshire and elsewhere, and various later records of these descendants, etc. The bulk of the "NH Hicks" in Richmond, NH seem to be his children by these later marriages.

That he was "Deacon Ephraim Hix" is clear from the 1759 and 1765 tax lists of Rehoboth, where he and son Barnard are taxed as one unit, since Ephraim had sold Barnard part of his house as well as some land (BCM Deed 48:418). In addition, the death record of his third wife also designates him as "Deacon Hix". The date of Ephraim's ordination as deacon is unknown, but he was probably a member of the Baptist Church, as his son John and two of his grandsons were Baptist ministers. Most, if not all, of the Hicks familes of Rehoboth were Baptists. This Ephraim 4 could sign his name, which helps to distinguish his records from those of his father, Ephraim 3, who signed by mark, and also those of his son, Ephraim 5, who also signed by mark. Grandson Ephraim 6 could write his name. The following are his Bristol County, MA Probate and Deed records: ---May 2, 1717 - (BCM Deed 16:433) Given - Ephraim Hix, Jr was deeded 50 acres at Rehoboth "for love" by his father, Ephraim Hix (thus proving his parentage). ---Feb 26, 1733/4 - (BCM Probate 8:67 & 68) Ephraim Hix, Jr of Rehoboth chosen as guardian by Mary Hix, above the age of 14, daughter of James Hix, deceased (his brother). On the same day he was also appointed guardian of Lois & Freelove Hicks, underage, also daughters of James Hix. (These children obviously his nieces) ---Nov 10, 1727- (BCM Deed 26:95) Bought - Ephraim Hix, Jr of Rehoboth, yeoman, for L 70, to Seth Garnsey of same, husbandsman, 20 acres near Rocky River and Manwhague Swamp. ---Dec 29, 1734 - (BCM Deed 30:434) Sold - Ephraim Hix, Jr of Rehoboth, yeoman to Samuel Bullock, Jr of Rehoboth, yeoman, for L 25, a piece of saltmarsh or meadow 3 acres, on west side of New Meadows River of Barrington. Deed acknowledged by said Ephraim on Mar 18, 1741/2. ---Mar 5, 1733/4 - (BCM Deed 48:417) Bought -

(more not yet entered -------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- Could HE have been the 1st Ephraim at Richmond ??? Mr. Gayle Hix is convinced yes!! An Ephraim Hix is listed in Bassett, "History of Richmond, NH", p. 11 as among first settlers in town, being there before 1765. Yet his son, Eph 5, was still in Rehoboth as late as 1775, while this Eph had disappeared from the Rehoboth tax list of 1769. His last Rehoboth deeds were recorded in Oct 1765. Mr. Hix feels that Eph 4 and 4th wife Ann Pearce moved to Richmond, along with 6 or 7 of his younger sons about 1765/6. He thinks they died about 1778 and are buried under 2 large fieldstones on what was the Hicks homestead property. Mr Hix located the land on a visit to Richmond in the 1970's, and located the fieldstones which he felt were clearly set as grave markers, rather than natural. Further substantiation for this theory is the way they are referred to in Richmond Town Records - as Ephraim, Ephraim, Jr, (married Mary Galusha), Ephraim 2nd, (married Mary Bowen) and Ephraim 3rd (married Lucy Blanding). This suggests that four generations of Ephraims were known in Richmond.
