Eleanor "Nellie" McElwain, a daughter of George and Nancy (Rector) McElwaine, was born about 1756.  She first married Norton Gum.  They were on the tax list of Rockingham Co., VA in 1784 with a family often.  The Abstract of Church Records, Linville Creek Church, Linville, VA, states, "Saturday befor 2d Sunday in July (1791) Elenor Gum, Widow of Norton Gum, was received for baptism."  "Saturday, November 12, 1791.  Elener Gum was excommunicated for alleged misconduct."    

After the death of Norton Gum, Eleanor "Nellie" married William Bailey in 1793.  Her children sold the property that was left to them by Norton Gum in 1811.
