Biography

Eleazer Folger, son of Peter and Mary (Morrell) Folger, was born in 1648 in Edgartown, Dukes County, Massachusetts.

He married Sarah Gardner, daughter of Richard Gardner and Sarah Shattuck in 1671.

Eleazer died in 1716.

He was well versed in the Indian language. Several documents are on record in his handwriting in the language of the Indians. His house was located a few yards east of the Jethro Coffin house and was built near 1699. On 3 Jan 1699 he had a part of some swamps north of his house lot set off to him.

GEDCOM Note

[3026504.ged] Eleazer Folger was a man of great ability and filled important position in the Nantucket community where he spent his adult years. He became one of the representatives of the community in the General Court of Massachusetts. Eleazer narrowly esaped drowning when the canoe in which he, his sister Bethia, her husband, John Barnard, their friend Isaac Coleman, and an Indian where traveling, capsized near Martha's Vineyard in June 6, 1669. The group was returning to Nantucket rom a trip to Martha's Vinyard to purchase furniture. Eleazer was the only survivor.
