About Elijah J. Mounsey
The Warren News, June 26, 1879 Death From Well-damps.
Elijah J. Monsey, of Liberty township, Wells county, met death last Monday in the following dreadful manner: He was digging a well on his farm and had reached a depth of about fifteen feet when he concluded to bore a distance down. A young Mr. Hunnicutt was with him in the well helping to sink the auger. They had not bored far till they heard a rushing noise below them, and, suspecting the cause, Hunnicutt was quickly drawn out. The bucket was lowered for Monsey, but a moment before it reached him he fell over unconscious. In the meantime an alarm had been given and several neighbors soon appeared on the spot. Blankets, bushes, etc., were thrown down to drive out the deadly gas, and then a brother was let down to help Monsey out. On reaching the bottom he too was so affected that he could not see, but succeeded in placing the body of his brother on the bucket and with him was drawn nearly to the top of the well when the chain broke and both together fell to the bottom again. A pole was then let down and on it he made his escape from the terrible place of destruction. The gas was afterwards eliminated and Elijah J. monsey was drawn out a corpse. The funeral services, attended by a large number of neighbors, were held at the residence on Tuesday, and were conductd by Rev. George Hubbard. The deceased was aged 24 years, 7 months and 26 days. He was married on the 12th of October, 1878, to Miss Leusetta Shadle, who deeply mourns her loss. He left the evidence with his mother that he experienced religion during the protracted meeting last winter.
