Kent is a town in Putnam County, New York, United States. Kent was part of the Philipse Patent of 1679, when it was still populated by the Wappinger tribe. Daniel Nimham, (1724-1778) was the last chief of the Wappingers and was the most prominent Native American of his time in the Hudson Valley.
The town was first settled by Europeans in the mid-18th century by Zachariah Merritt and others, from New England, Westchester County, or the Fishkill area. Elisha Cole and his wife Hannah Smalley built Coles Mills in 1748, having moved to that location the previous year from Cape Cod [1]. Coles Mill operated until 1888 when it was submerged under West Branch Reservoir. Around this same time the northeastern part of the county was settled by the Kent, Townsend, and Ludington families, among others. The father of Hannah Smalley and his family moved to Kent about two years before Elisha and his family. [2]

ELISHA born 26 Jan 1719 Eastham MA; died about 1801 Carmel NY; married (1) 13 Dec 1739 Priscilla Smalley of Eastham, daughter of Joseph Smalley and second wife, Mercy Young; born 8 Apr 1720; died 1740; married (2) HANNAH SMALLEY died 1811 Fredricksburgh NY. Elisha and Hannah moved from Harwich MA to what is now known as Putnam Co. NY during the fall of 1746 or spring of 1747. He built a log house near the stream that is the outlet of Barrett's Pond in the Town of Kent. In 1748 he built a grist mill on the outlet known as Cole's Mill and this was owned and operated by a member of the Cole family until 1888 when New York City purchased the water rights for reservoir purposes. Elisha was a Baptist preacher; he was partly paralyzed and somewhat demented before his death. The land where they settled in Putnam Co. was purchased from the State of NY after it had been confiscated from Roger Morris. Elisha was a member of the 7th Rgmt, Dutchess County Militia, during the Revolutionary War.
