About Elisha Underwood

ELISHA UNDERWOOD (1753-1810) was born in Woodstock, Connecticut. He married Abigail Chaffee on April 25, 1775, in his hometown. The documentation for his adult life and family comes from the Massachusetts Town and Vital Records” in which the town clerk of Wales wrote the history of the town families. Per this record, he arrived in Wales, Massachusetts in 1796 from Woodstock, Connecticut. The clerk wrote “Upon him Virtue did instill, as the dewdrops, the rain of peace and quiet.” He died on January 30, 1810, in Wales, Massachu-setts, at the age of 56, and was buried in Monson, Massachusetts. His head stone reads "In Memory of Elisha Underwood who departed this life Jan'y 30, 1810. In the 57th year of his life" It stands on the hill in the oldest part of the cemetery and it is not clear whether it is a memorial stone or marks his grave. No stone was found for his wife.
