About Nehemiah Underwood, I

Detached from Jonathan Underwood and Ruth Holland. His parents are unknown. Like Timothy and Samuel, it is speculated that he was their son, but there is no evidence for this.

aged 52

NEHEMIAH UNDERWOOD (1721 to 1772) He was born in Watertown. The town clerk of Sturbridge, Massachusetts recorded Nehemiah’s intention to marry Anna Marcy on January 4, 1744, and their marriage was recorded in Woodstock, Connecticut, on February 1, 1744. They lived in Sturbridge and had two children there. In 1749 they moved to Woodstock where they had eight more. It was said of him: “He was a prosperous farmer…he was a very religious man and was a deacon in the Baptist church…a very calm person and nothing ever disturbed him.” He died on October 20, 1772, in Woodstock, Connecticut, at the age of 51, and was buried there in Bungay Cemetery. On the back of his gravestone is engraved: “O, reader run. Your race is short, my death and grave doth you exhort, these few lines- Pray mark them well, for you are traveling to heaven or hell.”
