About Eliza Malpas
Eliza Malpas
This Eliza Malpas is listed as residing in Cam, Gloucestershire in the year 1871 however this is not correct. Eliza was one of the very first settlers in the new Colony of South Australia, arriving on the ship Coromandel in January 1837 at the young age of 16, accompanied by her 23 year old brother William. She returned to England with her brother Edward between 1844 and 1850, but thereafter remained in SA until her death at the home of her younger sister Anne (4th wife of Coromandel passenger Charles Mann), in 1902. Her youngest sister Elizabeth owned a house in Hurtle Sq, Adelaide, and died there in 1910. William Malpas died in Elizabeth's home in 1899. Eliza and Elizabeth never married. Their brother George (19) arrived in South Australia in 1838 and was subsequently followed in 1840 by their parents, John and Eliza, along with the other siblings (including Anne and Elizabeth). Eliza shares a grave with her father and her youngest sister Elizabeth in the St Georges heritage cemetery in Magill, Adelaide. Contributed by David Malpas with additions and corrections from William Othams.
