Biography

Elizabeth Foss is the daughter of Johan and Mary (Berry) Foss of the Dover area. >BLH. Elizabeth Foss and Nathaniel Batchelder were married September 09, 1685 in Hampton Falls, Rockingham county, New Hampshire. Johan (John) Foss went to England, where he was a calker, from Denmark with his brother Peter, and thence to New England. A tradition exists that he came to Boston in a British naval vessel, landing in Boston, by jumping overboard, swimming ashore, thus escaping further service. He lived for a short time at a place called Reid's Temple, near Boston. The first authentic record of him was when he was granted lands in Portsmouth, NH on February 24, 1657. The next record we find of him was when he was witness to a deed in Dover, NH, May 14, 1669 and a grand juror June 27, 1671. He was admitted an inhabitant of Dover January 1, 1665/65, and took an oath of allegiance June 21, 1669. Facts on his marriage seem to be confused.

There are twelve children listed in the Foss book: John, Samuel, Joshua, Elizabeth, Mary, William, Walter, Hannah, Thomas, Hinkson, Humphrey, Jemimah, and Samuel.

  • Foss Papers, typewitten; unknown origin, p4a. Tradition says Johan Foss was a caulker and deserted a British warship in Boston Harbor and from there went to Rye. He was in innholder 1694-1698 and a selectman in 1698. *Berries by the Beach, p23.
