"Betsy Fowlkes" MARRIED "Charles Price, I" on 8-25-1781 @ Amelia Co., VA.

They had "4 Children" from this 9-year-marriage which ended in Charles I's death before 9-20-1790 when his will was probated. He named his 4 Children with Betsy in his will.

Their 4 CHILDREN:

~Charles Price, II (1782-1851); m: 1799 to Elizabeth Fulcher & had 9 children. He is buried @ the "Old Olive Branch Church Cemetery" @ Elam in Prince Edward Co., VA.

~John Price (1785-1823) (from the Chancery Records: Index Library of VA = 1823 John Price Will.) *He provided for his twice-widowed mother Betsy in his will of 1823; Betsy died in late 1823 in MO.* Charles I left his plantation to his wife & 3 sons; but John became the sole-owner & built a home there @ Prince Edward Co., VA in about 1815 which he called FORT HILL. The home has been restored & greatly improved over the last 2 centuries & still stands today. It is about 12 miles from Pamplin, VA & about 22 miles from Appomattox. GPS: 37N16 78W31.

~William (?-1830); m: Martha Strange.

And, Betsy's mother's sister (her aunt) was Anne Jennings Thompson. I have not been able to find Ann after her father's will probation on 9-20-1790 where she was listed as one of his 4 children with Betsy. ________________________ BETSY's 2nd. MARRIAGE:

"Betsy Fowlkes Price" who was a widow with 4 children & a young step-son MARRIED "Benjamin Lewis Van Amburgh" on 1-12-1793 (3 1/2 years into her widowhood).

They had 2 SONS from this 13-year-marriage which ended when Benjamin died in 1806 in MO. They had moved to New Madrid, Louisiana Territory (Missouri) & later to Cape Girardeau, MO which is on the border with Illinois (just below St. Louis). This was 731 miles from her old home @ Prince Edward Co., VA which was by-then being called FORT HILL PLANTATION (near Pamplin, VA). Benjamin Van Amburgh was listed as a "farmer".

Their "2 SONS" were born "just 11 months apart"! Poor Betsy!!! JOSEPH was about 8, & DON was about 7 when their father died in 1806...once-again, leaving BETSY a widow with small children!

~Joseph Van Amburgh (b: 1-10-1799 @ New Madrid Louisiana Territory (Missouri); d: 12-2-1845 @ Alexander, Illinois). He married Jane Matthews (1801-1845) & had 10 Children. 5 of the 10 died very young from 1 to 7-years-old, but one daughter lived until 1900.

~Don Lewis Van Amburgh (b: 12-5-1799 @ New Madrid Louisiana Territory (Missouri); d: 11-5-1836 @ Cape Girardeau, MO.) He married Frances Cox (1810-1910) & had 3 Children. ________________________ "Betsy Fowlkes Price-Van Amburgh" died in late 1823 in MO & was undoubtedly missed by her 6 Children & many grandchildren & her surviving siblings & their families. _________________________ I'm attaching photos of the "Fowlkes' Family Home" which was called "Hyde Park" where BETSY FOWLKES Price-Van Amburgh lived with her parents & siblings on the tobacco plantation. "Hyde Park" still stands today in 2014 after 2 1/2 centuries! __________________________ ~ Lynda, 5-great's-granddaughter to "Sarah Jennings Fowlkes & John A. Fowlkes" through their daughter, Jerusha Fowlkes Ellington. __________________________* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 29 2021, 19:40:49 UTC
