Notes from Elizabeth's descendant Peter Arthur Byron:
Elizabeth Murray was born in Scotland and in 1806 was convicted in the Perth Assizes on four charges of theft - silver watches (2 charges), a dress, petticoat & shawl and about 65 shillings in currency. Known as Betty Murray alias Betty Baillie alias Elizabeth Barclay, she was sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia, and after serving 2 years in a Scottish Penal Institution arrived at Sydney on the 'Aeolus' on 26.1.1809. Between 1803-1810 only 43 Scots were transported to Botany Bay (31 men, 12 women). Elizabeth was one of the 12 women, and in 1809, the year of her coming to Australia there were about 10,000 white inhabitants in the Colony. Elizabeth McKellar had gained her freedom in 1813 and went to great lengths to conceal her convict past from her children. She practiced as a midwife for many years. Her ticket of leave number was 365.
There was a female prisoner from Scotland listed in the indents of the Admiral Gambier - Betty Murray (alias Baillie, alias Barclay) was from Perthshire and sentenced to 7 years transportation on 6th May 1806, however she may have been transported on the Aeolus. - https://www.jenwilletts.com/convict_ship_admiral_gambier_1808.htm
