Biography

Elizabeth Phinney, daughter of John and Sarah (Lumbart) Phinney, was born on 11 April 1690 in Barnstable, Barnstable, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[1][2] She was baptized in the Barnstable church on 10 May 1691.[3]

She married Nathan Davis, son of Jabez and Experience (Linnell) Davis,[4] on 25 November 1714 in Barnstable. [5] Their first four children were recorded in Barnstable by 1720.[5]

According to the Mayflower Society there is no absolute proof that Nathan and Elizabeth of Barnstable are the same Nathan and Elizabeth who had a child Nathan in Harwinton (1635) and were buried there in 1785 and 1786 with ages reported consistant with the known births of the Barnstable couple.[6]

There is documentation for Nathan in Barnstable until 1726, but not after that date.[6]

The will of Nathan of Harwinton, dated 8 Dec 1783, names his wife Elizabeth, son John, son Nathan (executor), daughters Sarah Hopkins and Martha Preston and grandsons Nathan and Josiah (no surnames).[7]

Nathan did not name Jabez, Elizabeth, or Isaac, his known children in his will. Jabez and Isaac died before his will and Elizabeth, who may be the Elizabeth who married Jonathan Butler in Harwinton, had children, but her death is unrecorded. Of the children mentioned in the will: Events in Harwinton, Nathan has a birth record in 1635; a John Davis married Ruth Davis 1748; Sarah Davis married Hezekiah Hopkins 1742; a Martha Davis married (1) 1755 Amos Catling and (2) 1771 Ebenezer Preston (m. in Winchester, Connecticut). Estimated births of these three children fit in to the gap between Isaac and Nathan.[6]

Nathan, of Harwinton, died 17 September 1785 aged 96 years and was buried in the Old Cemetery in Harwinton, Litchfield, Connecticut.[8][9][10] Elizabeth died on 30 December 1786,[2][11] or 30 June [or July] 1786,[12] in her 97th year, and was buried next to Nathan.

Children:[6]

Jabez, b. 7 Oct 1715 Barnstable[5] Sarah, b. 12 Aug 1717, d. 23 Aug 1717, Barnstable[5] Elizabeth, b. 15 Sep 1718 Barnstable[5] Isaac, b. 1 Jan 1720 Barnstable[5] Probably Sarah Davis b. probably at Barnstable about 1722 based on age 68 at 1790; m. Hezekiah Hopkins 3 June 1742, Harwinton. Probably John Davis, probably b. at Barnstable 1723-1727, based on 1 Dec 1748 marriage to Ruth Lewis in Farmington Probably Martha Davis b. probably at Harwinton 1730-1734 based on 10 Dec 1755 m. to Amos Catling.
