About Elizabeth Brigham

The Late Mrs. T. W. Brigham

Mrs. Elizabeth Brigham, wife of T. W. Brigham, whose death was briefly noted in Friday's issue, was in her 63rd year. She was the eldest child of Colonel James and Elizabeth (Dubbs) Bleakley, and was born in Franklin January 16, 1845. She had the best education the local schools could afford. July 7, 1863, she was married to Thaddeus W. Brigham, who survives with their one son, Thad B. Brigham, of this city. Surviving also is her venerable mother, now in her 85th year, with whom Mrs. Brigham has of late years made her home, and who now laments the first break in the circle of her children. The surviving children are Clara, wife of Maj. Alexander McDowell, of Sharon; William J.; Effie, wife of Dr. E. W. Moore; Orrin D. and Edmund of Franklin, and Harry of Valparaiso, Neb. Col. James Bleakley died October 3, 1883.

The following about Mrs. Brigham was written by H. M. Irwin, the Derrick correspondent, who speaks from a life-long acquaintance:

"Mrs. Brigham was ong and well known in this community. Hers was a positive nature, large of heart and ready of hand, which impressed itself upon the wide circle that came within the influence of her life. that life was known to her friends and family, an open book, fair in the record of its pages. Though possessed of ample means for a life of leisure and easy enjoyment, she instinctively devoted herself to the every-day duties that would help others along the journey, seemingly unconscious of her self-sacrifice. While fond of social life and happy in the companionship of her friends, she not incline to the allurements and distractions of so-called society. She found her career in the practice of the domestic virtues, beneath the roof-tree of her home. She had a happy aptitude for home making and government, She early acquired the habit of doing things thoroughly and punctually, to the best of her exceptional womanly ability. In all this she was favored by inheritance of the well-known energy and practical judgment of her father, the late Colonel Bleakley.

"While Mrs. Brigham looked well to the ways of her household, helpful in its hospitalities, comforting the old, cheering the young, she found time, as all busy and earnest souls do, to bear a large part in he work for the general good. In the social functions of the church, in festival enterprises for missions or special local benefits, 'Lizzie' Brigham was for years a central and inspiring figure. She talked religion hut little, but she acted it - mind, taking the form of cheerful service, both within and outside the home. Hers was such a service as could not be computed or compensated in dollars and cents. the closing of such a life brings a general sense of loss to the community in which it was lived, and merits an amplitude of tribute that is usually reserved for persons of prominence."

The funeral services will beheld at the Bleakley residence, corner of Buffalo and 12th streets, at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon, and will be conducted by Rev. Mr. R. B. Beattle, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of which Mrs. Brigham has been a communicant from her early youth.

Mrs. Brigham was a member of Franklin Lodge, No. 178, Knights and Ladies of Honor.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Oct 6 2019, 14:13:31 UTC
