About Harry Bleakley

Harry Bleakley, aged 51 years, a native of Franklin, PA and a retired business man of Valparaiso, Nebraska, died at 11:45 o'clock August 26, 1910 a the home of his mother, Mrs. James Bleakley (Elizabeth Dubbs Bleakley). His death was due to a relapse of mountain fever, contracted in Wyoming, which disease is similar to typhoid fever. He and a companion established a camp near Rawlins, Wyoming early in the summer, with the intention of spending the summer there. One day Mr. Bleakley broke through the ice of a mountain stream, which experience was soon followed by his contracting fever. He was removed by his companion to Rawlins and thence to Valparaiso. For a while he got better, but about a month ago suffered a relapse. When relatives here learned of the serious character of his condition his brother, Edmund Bleakley, and brother-in-law Dr. Edwin W. Moore, went to Valparaiso to see him. A consultation of physicians resulted in the decision to remove him to his mother's home and he arrived here this week. His condition on the trip became quite critical at times, but after his arrival in Franklin he got better and his relatives became hopeful of his recovery. Late Friday afternoon, however, his condition took a change for the worse and he sank rapidly until death. The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Bleakley and the days of his youth were spent in this city. He attended the public schools and afterward received some training in the banking business in the old International Bank, under his father. In 1880, he and Colonel R. Richardson went to Valparaiso, where Mr. Bleakley acquired extensive real estate interests and later established a bank. He was one of the foremost business men of the town and contributed largely to its advancement. About a year and a half ago he retired from active participation in business. Besides his mother, Mr. Bleakley, leaves two brothers, Orrin Dubbs Bleakley and Edmund Bleakley, of Franklin, and two sisters, Mrs. E.W. Moore (Effie) and Mrs. Alexander McDowell (Clara), of Sharon, PA. Mrs. McDowell is now en route home from a sojourn in Europe. Among Franklin people who knew harry Bleakley is death will cause sadness, for he is remembered as a young man of upright character and pleasing social qualities, He was a favorite among the young people of his day in Franklin. Services for friends of the family will be held at the mother's home at 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon. Interment private in the Franklin Cemetery. Reverend Robert E. Brown officiating. The following were pallbearers: C.J. Crawford, Frank Lane, John Emery, H.R. Mattern, Thomas McGough, C. M. Hulin, R. J. Hanna, Dr. A. Kolb, F. W. Officer and J. P. Kenne. Interment was made in the Franklin Cemetery.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Oct 6 2019, 14:13:31 UTC
