A home called Belvidere was built about 1750 on the falls, just as his grandfather had done before he purchased Westover, by William III for his wife. With William being gone in the later years of the 1750's, in a letter she wrote him in 1757 expressing her loneliness of being here on the falls alone with her children and house servants. She died 3 years later, either and accident or suicide as some had thought.

From the Internet. "One of the Westover Ghosts is Elizabeth Hill Carter Byrd. She was very unhappy in her marriage, and her mother in law did not like her. One day Mrs. Byrd, Sr told Elizabeth that letters from William Byrd's other women were in a high boy in an upstairs bedroom. Elizabeth went to the room to find the letters and climbed up the lower drawers to find the letters in the top drawer. The high boy fell over on her and killed her. Sad."
