GEDCOM Note
Research Notes of Janice McAlpine; Thanks to her great research
we now know that Dr Thomas Moody and Mary Young were Elizabeth Adaline M oody
parents.
AT LAST A SOURCE THAT PROVES THAT ELIZABETH MOODY WAS IN FACT THEDAUG HTER OF DR. THOMAS Moody
Elizabeth Adeline Moody: Birth: 5 Mar <1779>, Lunenburg Co., Virginia. Death: 19 Jun 1859 Etowah, McMinn Co., Tennessee. Burial: Old LibertyH ill Cemetery, McMinn Co., TN. Elizabeth married James Samuel Cassabout 1 795 in Iredell Co., North Carolina.
"Elizabeth Cass of Tennessee" was listed among the children of Dr.Thom as Moody in the 1857 petition to administer his estate in ClarkeCo., A labama. (Clarke Co. Ala. J-344/5) This fits with long-standingCass fam ily history. In the 1950s, Cass researcher, Adah Daniel Gould, contacte d various descendents of Elizabeth and James S. Cass. Theyreported tha t Elizabeth's father was a Dr. Moody. (Cass Family ofIredell County, N orth Carolina, Adah Daniel Gould, 1955, p. 2.)
In addition to the estate record and family histories, there are anumb er of other things that support Dr. Thomas and Mary Young Moody asEliz abeth's parents. Dr. Thomas Moody was a land owner inSurry/Iredell Cou nty on Hunting Creek where James Cass/Cast Sr. wasalso a landowner. As f ar as I can tell, Dr. Thomas Moody's family wasthe only Moody family i n the area. The Moody came from Virginia, whereElizabeth Moody Cass wa s born. Their son Benjamin Epps Moody marriedNancy Cass/Cast, daughter o f James Cass/Cast Sr. Nancy was the sisterof Elizabeth's husband James S . Cass. Elizabeth named her second sonThomas, presumably after her fat her, and another son Benjamin EppsCass, presumably after her brother. ( These names are not Cass familynames.)
Elizabeth also gave her son James the middle name "Melmuth." Versionso f that middle name continued in her descendents for severalgenerations . This is an unusual name and comes from the Young family.Mary Young M oody's brother Archibald Young named a son ThomasMelmuth/Melmouth Youn g, her half-brother Francis Young named a sonThomas Melmuth Young and a nother half-brother, Samuel, named a sonArchibald Melmuth Young. In ad dition, Benjamin Epps Moody's daughter,Lucinda, named a son John Melmu th Allison.
Mary Young Moody's half-brothers Francis and John were neighbors ofJam es Cass on the 1810 census in Iredell, Co., NC. John Wyatt Moodyand An derson Lindsey (husband of Sarah Moody) witnesses an 1815 deedof gift f rom James Cass Sr. to his daughter Mary Cass Harvell. MaryYoung Moody' s brothers, Thomas and William Young, were on deeds, etc,in Iredell Co . with members of the extended Cass family. So thereundoubtedly was a c lose relationship between the Moody and Cassfamilies. Close family rel ationships often led to marriage. Althoughthere is a fair amount of in formation available about the sons of Dr.Thomas Moody and Mary Francis Y oung, there is virtually no informationabout the daughters other than t heir names. Some Moody researchers, give a later approximate date of bi rth for Elizabeth (1788/1806) andshow her marrying a Mr. Styles -- wit h no further information. I havenot been able to find a Mr. Styles on a ny records in Iredell Co, NorthCarolina, or Warren Co., Tennessee -- p laces where Elizabeth Moodywould have married. However, Elizabeth's si ster Temperance married aMr. LYLES about the time Elizabeth is said to h ave married Mr. Styles.I suspect the sisters have been confused.
I have given Elizabeth's place of birth as Lunenburg Co., VA, whichwas w here the Thomas Moody family was living before 1790. In addition, her s on Benjamin Epps Cass's 1880 census information listed herbirthplace a s Virginia.
Elizabeth date of birth is usually listed as 5 Mar 1774. I think theye ar of birth is wrong. It comes from someone transcription of hergrave m arker at the Old Liberty Hill Cemetery, County Road 469, McMinnCo., TN . When I visited a few years ago, the stone was a bit hard toread, so I a m not sure the widely circulated transcription isaccurate. It could as e asily have been 1777 or 1779. In addition, 18thand early 19th century g rave markers are often wrong on year of birthor age at death. People u sually got the day and month right, butfrequently got the year wrong, i nvariably making the person older atdeath than he or she actually was. S o even if the transcription isaccurate, that does not prove that Eliza beth was born 1774.
Census information is also problematic in computing birth year. Ittend s to be more accurate in the early years, becoming less and lessaccura te as the person gets up in age. In Elizabeth's case, her birthyear fr om the 1850 census (1773) doesn't fit with the rangeestablished by the 1 800-1840 censuses -- 1776-1780. In fact, on the1820 census, she was ac tually listed as being younger than James Cass, who was born 1775. He w as 45+ on that census and she was 26-44.
Elizabeth father, Dr. Thomas Moody, was probably born in 1759. Hewoul d have been 15, at most, in 1774, making it likely that Elizabethwas b orn after 1774. Elizabeth and James Cass were on the 1800 censuswith t hree children. Assuming a child every other year, this wouldgive them a m arriage year of 1795, at the earliest. Women in thosedays usually marr ied between ages 14 and 18. If Elizabeth married atthe relatively old a ge of 18, she would have been born in 1777. Isuspect she married young er, perhaps at age 16 or 17. This would giveher a birth year of 1778 o r 1779.
