Lydia Clements died in England before her husband, Robert Clements, immigrated to America with many of their children, including Abigail Lydia. The widowed Robert Clements purchased the town of Haverill, Massachusetts from the Indians!

Biography

This is the profile for Lydia, the wife of Robert Clements.

Sole Record

The only record that has been found for Lydia is the record of her burial. The Ansley, Warwickshire parish register contains the following entry in the burial records for 1641 (Old Calendar):

Lydia the wife of Robert Clemence yeoman was buryed March 12: 1641[1]

A image of burial record is attached to this profile.

Parentage; Maiden Name

Lydia's parentage and maiden name are unknown. As stated in Percival Wood Clement's 1927 Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Clements, "Much research has failed to disclose anything in regard to the parentage of Lydia, the first wife of Robert Clements, and the mother of all of this children."[2] Many online family trees state that her maiden name was Drummer and that she was the daughter of a man named Robert Drummer; however, none of those family trees provide any reliable evidence for those claims. Drummer was the maiden name of the first wife of Robert and Lydia's eldest son, Job, but no reliable evidence suggests that it was also Lydia's maiden name. Job married his first wife, Margaret Drummer, in Haverhill, Massachusetts in 1645.[3] Since Margaret Drummer's family lived in North Stoneham, Hampshire (about 115 miles south of Cosby, Leicestershire),[3] it is unlikely that Robert Clements would have had an association with the Drummer family prior to arriving in New England.

Date and Place of Birth

Lydia's date and place of birth are uncertain. Based on her husband's date of baptism (December 1595)[4] and their estimated date of marriage (about 1617), Lydia was probably born sometime in 1596-1599. Based on the fact that her husband was baptized in Cosby, Leicestershire and the fact that evidence indicates he lived in Huncote, Leicestershire upon getting married,[4] Lydia was probably born in or near Cosby or Huncote, Leicestershire.

Marriage

As noted above, Percival Wood Clement, in his 1927 Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Clements, stated that Lydia was Robert Clements' first wife and the mother of all of his children.[2] There is, however, no affirmative evidence that supports that statement, such as baptismal records with her name on them. More correctly, it should be said that since there is no evidence that suggests that Robert Clements had a prior wife, it is assumed that she was his first wife and, since she died in 1642, the mother of all of his children.

The date and place of marriage of Lydia and Robert Clements are uncertain. Percival Wood Clement stated that Lydia and Robert's eldest child, Job, was born about 1615.[3] If Job was born in 1615, that would mean that Lydia and Robert were probably married in 1615 or earlier, when Robert was at most 19-20.[4] It is unclear, however, what evidence Percival used to estimate Job's date of birth. Percival stated that Job died on September 4, 1682 at the age of 67, but provided no source for either that date of death or age at death.[3] (Job made his will on September 2, 1682 and it was proved on November 9, 1683.[3]%29 It is possible that the age at death was estimated based on the estimated date of birth rather than the other way around. Even if some record relating to Job's death stated that he was 67 at the time of death, claims of age at time death are often incorrect. Given the unlikelihood of Lydia and Robert getting married when Robert was 19-20, rather than their date of marriage being in 1615 or earlier, it is more likely that Job's estimated date of birth of 1615 is incorrect and he was born a few years later. It is probably most likely that Lydia and Robert got married in 1617, shortly after his father's death and about the time he received his share of his father's estate and purchased property in Huncote, when Robert would have been 21.[4]

Since Robert's family had lived in Cosby and he settled after his marriage in Huncote,[4] it is likely that Lydia and Robert were married in or near Cosby or Huncote, Leicestershire.

Residency in Huncote, Leicestershire and Ansley, Warwickshire As discussed in the profile for her husband Robert Clements, after their marriage, Lydia and Robert appear to have lived Huncote, Leicstershire until sometime in 1621-1623 and moved to Ansley, Warwickshire by 1624.

Children

Lydia and Robert had the following children. Their identity is established, in part, by references in Robert's 1658 will to his sons Job, Robert, John, Abraham and Daniel and to his sons-in-law Moses Pengrow, Abraham Morrill and John Osgood.[5]

  1. Job, b. say 1617[6] probably in Huncote, Leicestershire,[7] m. 1st December 25, 1644 Margaret Drummer in Haverhill, Massachusetts,[8][9] m. 2d before 1658 Lydia ______,[9] m. 3d July 16, 1673 Joanna (Unknown) Leighton at Dover, New Hampshire,[9] d. September 4, 1682 in Dover, New Hampshire[9]
  2. Lydia, b. say 1618[10] probably in Huncote, Leicestershire,[7] m. about 1644 Moses Pengry in Massachusetts,[10] d. January 16, 1675/6[10]
  3. John, b. probably October 1620[11] in Huncote, Leicestershire,[7] bpt. October 22, 1620 in Narborough, Leicestershire,[12][13] m. June 1 or 4, 1648 Sarah Osgood in Haverhill, Massachusetts,[8][13] d. about 1659[13]
  4. Abraham, b. say 1622[14] probably in either Huncote, Leicestershire or Ansley, Warwickshire,[7][14] m. 1st Elizabeth _______,[14] m. 2d after October 1656 Jane (Unknown) Aylett, d. April 5, 1677 Killencraft, County Cavan, Ireland[14]
  5. Daniel, b. say 1624[15] probably in Ansley, Warwickshire,[7][15] m. before 1660 Elizabeth _________,[15] d. 1680 in Rathkenny, County Cavan, Ireland[15]
  6. Sarah, b. about 1627 probably in Ansley, Warwickshire, m. 1st June 10, 1645 Abraham Morrill in Salisbury, Massachusetts, m. 2d October 8, 1665 Thomas Mudgett in Salisbury, Massachusetts, d. August 1694 in Salisbury, Massachusetts. (See discussion and sources in Sarah's profile.)
  7. Robert, b. probably sometime in 1629-1634[16] probably in Ansley, Warwickshire,[7] m. December 8, 1652 Elizabeth Fawne in Haverhill, Massachusetts,[17][18] d. probably in 1714 in Haverhill[18]
  8. Mary, b. probably sometime in 1632-1637[19] probably in Ansley, Warwickshire,[7] m. November 15, 1653 John Osgood in Haverhill, Massachusetts,[20][21] d. October 27, 1710 in Andover, Massachusetts[21]

Note that the absence of baptismal records for the children born in Ansley is presumably due to the fact that the Ansley parish register does not contain any baptismal records prior to May 1637.[22]

Death; Burial

Lydia died and was buried in Ansley on March 12, 1641/2.[1]

  • Since it appears that Robert Clements lived in Huncote in Narborough parish from the time of his marriage until at least 1620 (when son John was baptized in Narborough) but was "of Ansley" by 1624, it is probably that Robert and Lydia's children born before 1602 were born in Huncote, those born in or after 1624 were born in Ansley, and those born in 1621-1623 born in either Huncote or Anlsey.

  • Robert stated in a deposition in 1664 that he was aged about 30 years, which would mean that he was born about 1634. See Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Clements, p. 30. However, that would mean (1) that there was a 7 year gap between his birth and the birth of his next older sibling, (2) that he was only 18 when he was born and (3) that he was one year younger than his wife Elizabeth Fawne, who was baptized in April 1633. It is therefore quite possible, if not likely, that he was born at least 3 years earlier.

  • Mary stated in a deposition in 1695 that she was aged 58 years, which would mean that she was born about 1637. See Ancestors and Descendants of Robert Clements, p. 30. However, since that would mean that she was only about 16 when she got married, it is quite possible that her date in the deposition is incorrect and that she was born up to 5 years earlier.
