Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cocke-165

James, son of Thomas Cocke and Agnes Powell,[2] was born about 1665 in Henrico County, Virginia.

James married Elizabeth Pleasants on January 11, 1691 in Henrico County, Virginia. [3] Through this marriage James acquired the estate of "Curles" on the James River, becoming known as "James Cocke of Curles." [4]

James and Elizabeth had known children:

  1. James Cocke
  2. Pleasant Cocke, d 1744
  3. Elizabeth Cocke

On 1 August 1692 John Pleasants made a deed of gift to his daughter Elizabeth Cocke, wife of James Cocke (son of Thomas Cocke, senr., of Henrico Co.) "to the said James Cocke and Elizabeth, his wife, 70 acres on Curles Swamp, Henrico Co. purchased of Abra; Childers, also plantation or dividend of land purchased by said John Pleasants of Henry Rowen and Robert Woodson, Senr. Said lands to said James and Elizabeth during their lives or the life of the longest liver, then to eldest son or eldest daughter...." [5]

John Pleasant's will was proved in 1698, and gives the names of his children as John, Joseph and Elizabeth Pleasants, which he wrote in 1690. In a codicil he gives her name as Elizabeth Cocke, wife of James Cocke, and mentions a grandson James Cocke. Another grandson was Thomas Pleasants. He mentions his wife's daughter, Mary (Tucker) Woodson, and specifies that all the children were from the body of his beloved wife Jane. His wife survived him by several years, but was too old to have more children.

Some researchers say James Cox’s wife Elizabeth was Elizabeth Pleasants and his parents Christopher Cock(e) and Grace Bolithoe. [NO] A headright was granted John Woodson III (or IV) in 1703 for transporting one John Isbell to Virginia. This John Isbell was a broker according to one website, and thought to be brother of William Isbell, in which case he may have travelled to England and returned to Virginia. John Woodson II (1632-84) married Mary Tucker, daughter of Samuel Tucker and Jane Larcom (Larcomb, Larcombe) Tucker who married secondly John Pleasants. Some researchers show that James Cox (d.1739) married Elizabeth Pleasants, daughter of Jane Larcom(be) Tucker & John Pleasants and therefore the half-sister of Mary Tucker Woodson. John Woodson III (headright of John Isbell) would be a first cousin of James Cox's daughter who married John Isbell's nephew Henry Isbell.
