Richard Combs owned 26 acres of land in Hempstead October 6, 1685. Most of the people in Hempstead at that time arrived in 1644 with the Reverend Richard Denton who arrived in New England in 1630. [1] Richard appeared in court at Hempstead July 3, 1669. He appeared on the 1683 tax list of Hempstead. [2]
According to GDAC, "The compiler of the article on this census states that the names of the parents are given first, followed by the children. Since Richard's name is omitted, we must assume that Elizabeth was his widow and the then head of the family." Although it is possible that Richard I was not yet deceased, but in Freehold, Monmouth Co, NJ, with his elder sons, Thomas I and Richard II, we know that he was deceased by no later than 11 Mar 1706 [1705/6 or 1706/7?] when his son, Thomas I, referenced the dower rights of his mother, Elizabeth, in a deed: "excepting the thirds of ye farm for the which is my mothers Elizabeth COMESES har lif time..." (GDAC, 1925. Ref: Hempstead Records 2:300).
By May 1706, Elizabeth was deceased (sale of above land by John COMES), and according to GDAC, no estate records are extant for either she or Richard I.

”It's clear from the following document that Richard's wife was Elizabeth. An argument is provided that the mother of their son Richard was an Elizabeth Hubbs: http://www.combs-families.org/combs/ms/ms-gdac.txt. Alternative pages on WikiTree do have Elizabeth as John's sister and daughter of the immigrant patriarch Robert Hubbs (b. 1624). However, per his page on this site, Robert was known to have had six children, and none were named Elizabeth. There appear to have been other Hubbs in Newport, Rhode Island (where the Hubbs family landed), so the surname "Hubbs" could be possible but does not seem likely.”
