biography

From page 63 of The Ancestry of Mary Isaac, C. 1549-1613: Wife of Thomas Appleton of Little ... By Walter Goodwin Davis

Ralph Toke (the elder, his nephew, son of his brother Thomas, being the younger) was the most prominent of the three brothers. Born about 1410, the visitation pedigrees give him various wives but ignore Elizabeth, the wife who survived him. It is most improbable that he married "Jane Haut, daughter of Roger Haut," a close study of the Haute family making the existence of such persons very dubious. Nor can much satisfaction be drawn from the other alleged wife, "Maud, daughter of Henry Drmyn," a surname which challenges identification. The Haute attribution may arise from the fact that the mother of Joan Goldwell, wife of Thomas Toke, Ralph's brother, was a Haute.
Toke died in 1451. He left a will, which has not survived, naming his wife Elizabeth and Thomas Doyley, whom Elizabeth soon married, joint executors. Doyley was mayor of Dover 1453-1455, and the local historian has "knighted" both Toke and Doyley, seemingly without justification. In 1455 Sir Gervaise Clifton testified that Ralph Toke had owned the manor of St. Nicholas Court on the Isle of Thanet but had sold it to William Port.*. ....
The Doyleys were soon in legal difficulties. In 1451 or 1452 they appealed in Chancery for a conveyance of the lands called Pistoke and Pecte in the parish of Rodmersham which Toke had contracted to buy from Lawrence Stonestrete for 250 marks, making payment of 100 marks before his death. Stonestrete had refused delivery and before his own death had conveyed the lands to feoffees for the use of his wife Maud. At about the same time certain merchants of "Caleys in the Hansa of Alemagn" sued the Doyleys for the return of sums alleged to have been unduly demanded and collected at the customs of Sandwich by Toke. Later, between 1452 and 1454 Thomas Featherston, who had shared the office of collector of customs at Sandwich with Ralph Toke from January 31,1446, to February 3,1447, sued them for 68 which he stated Toke owed him from the proceeds of the office. ...
After the death of Elizabeth Doyley her son William Toke sued Thomas Doyley as his father's executor and John Isak, John Oxenden and Thomas Toke, as his father's feoffees, for two tenements called Beltyng and Cosmersblene which he alleged were, according to his father's will, to have come to him at the end of his mother's life-estate. The pleadings in this case, which was entered between 1459 and 1466, disclose further facts about Ralph Toke's family and possessions .....
