Sources name an Elizabeth Fleming's (d. 23 Aug 1755) husband as Josias Payne Jr., b.1735- marr. 1735? He is a descendant of our Bates family. His father had married Ann Fleming c 1730. When he died, Ann married his cousin John Payne...They had John who married Mary Coles and were the parents of Dolly Payne Madison, wife of President John Madison. Mary Coles was a 1st cousin of Patrick Henry.

Josias Payne Jr. was the son of Josias Payne and grandson of George Payne who married Mary Woodson. Mary Woodson was the sister of John Woodson who married Judith Tarleton (daughter of Stephen Tarleton and Susanna Bates. Josias' had a sister Anne Payne who married William Harrison in 1723. He moved from Goochland of Pittsylvania County, Val, to the Watauga Valley in TN., and afterwards to the vicinity of
Nashville.
