About Elizabeth Fletcher
Elizabeth Selby, daughter of Tobias Selby, was born in 1655 in Accomack County, Virginia. Elizabeth Selby Fletcher stated her age as 33 years or there about in a court deposition recorded April 3, 1688.
She married William Fletcher 20 Jan 1673/74 in Accomack County.
Elizabeth learned some of her father's skills and was sought out on occasion by neighbors to cure them of ills. One such instance resulted in non payment and her husband went to court on her behalf. William Fletcher was granted a 1699 judgement against John Collins for 450 lbs tobacco was for Fletcher's wife Elizabeth having cured an imposthume (abscess) on the thigh of Collins' daughter, and 50 lbs tobacco was for a pair of shoes. By Elizabeth's concession, 50 lbs tobacco was deducted from the claim, yet Collins was still ordered to pay 450 lbs tobacco and the costs of the suit.
"William and Elizabeth had ten known children born between 1674 and 1692. The Fletcher land and home was located just to the south of Pungoteaque, Virginia near Andua Creek. The area was called Whitelaw and the Fletcher home farm was passed on to the first sons for three generations."
She was witness to the will of Triniman, Benjamin - 1 May 1676 - 1 June 1676 (name listed as Elizabeth Selvey, p. 8. She was witness to the will of John Smally 2 May 1689 - 18 June 1689 (name listed as Elizabeth Fletcher) William Fletcher, in his 1710 will, names wife Elizabeth and children:
