Robert Gamblin and his wife Elizabeth (____) Mayo Gamblin (the widow of ____ Mayo) and her son John Mayo arrived in Roxbury in 1633. Robert Gamlin (Jr), was born say 1610 the son of Robert Gamlin and an unknown wife. Robert Gamlin Jr. was admitted to Roxbury church as member #67: "Robert Gamlin junior he arrived at N.E. the 20th of the 3rd month [1633]; he brought only one child, which was the son of his wife by a former husband his name is John Mayo, he was but a child" [Roxbury Church Records 77]. His wife was Elizabeth ______ who was widow of _____ Mayo.
"The church entry for Mary Gamlin states clearly that she came with her father in 1632, and his name appears on the passenger list of the William & Francis in that year. Since this ship arrived at Boston on 5 June 1632, Robert Gamlin Jr. cannot have come on this ship with his father and sister, for Eliot states that he arrived on 20 May, year not given. He more likely came in the following year, perhaps on the William & Jane or the Mary & Jane, both of which arrived in May of 1633."
The will of Robert Gamlen late of Roxbury, mentions son Benjamin Gamlen, wife Elizabeth sol executor, son in law Isaack Chever; friends William Parker and John Bouls to be overseers. Made 3 Aug 1663 in ye presense of Christopher Peake, Edward Morris proved 29 Jan 1663 (Suffolk Probate 1:419 See p 466 The history of Peter Parker and Sarah Ruggles of Roxbury, Mass by Linzee, John William)
Suffolk Deed 33:176: I Benjamin Gambling of Roxbury... and Obedience my wife... my son Benjamin Gambling of Portsmouth, NH dated 1 Aug 1713
Note Robert Charles Anderson seems to have completely missed this entry from the New England Historical and Genealogical Register (Boston, MA: NEHGS, 1886) 40:269+@272
"These entries were taken from Lechford's notebook which identifies the English homes of early settles in this country edited from the Nation (New York, 4 Mar 1886) with a few additions also found in the notebook and date from 1638-1641."
Notebook entry:
"51. John Mayo of Town Marroling, co. Kent, deceased, had by wife Rebecca, son Thomas (who had died leaving a son John and widow Elizabeth remarried to Robert Gamlyn of Roxbury in N.E.), daughter Mary of Dorchester, N.E. and Frances, wife of Steven Egland of Sandwich, co. Kent."
This clearly shows that the first husband of Elizabeth (Unknown) was Thomas Mayo son of John and Rebecca.
