About Elizabeth Vaulx

Biography

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Burwell-94

So far there are no sources to indicate she was married to Peter Garland of Virginia. The names Peter and Garland were both common and there seem to have been a number of Peter Garlands at the time, in England and in America.

Elizabeth Burwell was baptized in Ampthill on February 25, 1620/21[1]

Elizabeth Burwell was the daughter of Edward Burwell and Dorothy Bedell of Harlington, Bedford, England.

Robert Vaulx was born about 1610 in London, England. He was a prominent merchant dealing with Virginia and probably married Elizabeth Burwell, sister of Major Lewis Burwell, whom Robert called "brother".

Robert Vaulx had three brothers who came with him to Virginia. They were Humphrey, Thomas, and James. James Vaulx was a Justice of York County, Virginia, in 1670 and married Elizabeth, last name unknown. Robert Vaulx's daughter, Elizabeth, married Thomas Boylston.

Elizabeth may have been privately divorced from Robert Vaulx in Virginia after he permanently moved back to England[2]

Elizabeth died in Bruton Parish, Virginia in 1666. [2]

MY NOTE: Some researchers have conjectured that Elizabeth Hull, widow of George Hull was in fact Elizabeth Burwell. However, no proof is given. Familysearch.org lists English records for several George Hull/Hall marrying an Elizabeth between 1639-1643 which casts serious doubt on the story. Also, George Hull was only granted 50 acres in 1639 in Elizabeth City, VA that is more typical of a freed indentured servant who would have been below Elizabeth Burwell’s social strata.

NOTE: Dorothy Bedell Burwell relict of Edward Burwell and mother of Elizabeth Burwell, married Roger Wingate, JAN 1637 in London England (Ref: Adventurers of Purse and Person, Virginia, 1607-1624/5, 4th Ed., by John Frederick Dorman). Roger had been a partner with Edward Kingswell in a venture to plant a colony in Carolina in 1633. In October that year Kingswell and Wingate, with their families and forty persons, arrived at Jamestown, VA....but, no vessel was there to carry them to their destination ... they waited in VA until spring....expedition was abandoned & Wingate returned to England in March 1634. When Kingswell died, his will proved in 1636, gave headrights to Roger Wingate. Roger was made Treasurer of Virginia in 1639. He was a member of the Council.

BY a deed dated July 28, 1648, found by W. G. Stanard among the records of York County, Va., Dorothy Wingate, relict of Roger Wingate, Treasurer of Virginia, conveyed to "her well-beloved son Lewis Burwell" all rents due at said Roger's decease, and confirmed to her by the King.

The Visitation of Bedfordshire with Additional Pedigrees (the latter prepared in 1637), published by the Harleian Society, tells us that Roger Wingate, living in London in January, 1637, married Dorathey, dau. of William Bedell of Catworth, County Huntingdon, widow of Edward Burwell of Harlington, County Bedford. The records of Great Catworth covering a long period were examined for me by the Rector; and, while the marriage of William Bedell was not found, having probably occurred in Northamptoushire, the baptism of his daughter Dorothy was. Some entries of the surname in the records aforesaid are followed by the word "generosus," indicating the rank of the family; and the inquisition upon the death of the William Bedell who is called "of Moldesworth" in Camden's Visitation of Huntingdonshire, printed by the Camden Society, identifies him as at one time styled "of Catworth Magna." So the paternal line of Dorothy, the mother of the first Lewis Burwell, can be traced to a John Bedell of Wollaston, Northamptonshire, who died in 1485, with whom the pedigree in Camden's Visitation starts. The inquisition mentions several sons of William Bedell, besides Silvester, his heir, who alone is mentioned in the Visitation, and, among them, Henry Bedell, who is called "brother" in Edward Burwell's will; and the name of the last wife of William was Elizabeth, the Visitation calling his wife Bridget Power of Northamptonshire.

Blaydes's Genealogia Bedfordiensis has extracts from parish records relating to the Burwells, from which we find that Edward had the following children, the word "gent." appearing in each entry after the father's name:

EDWARD, bapt. at Houghton Conquest, Apr. 14, 1616, bu. at Ampthill, Mch. 4, 1620, DOROTHY, bapt. Ampthill, June 24, 1618, perhaps m. (???) Woodington, as Elizabeth Vaulx conveyed land to her "kinsmen" John and Charles Woodington about 1657, ELIZABETH, bapt. Ampthill, February 25, 1620, probably m. Robert Vaulx or Vause, of London and some time of Virginia, merchant, who made a power of attorney to his "brother" Lewis Burwell, and whose wife about 1656 is called Elizabeth, LEWIS, bapt. at Ampthill, Mch. 5, 1621, the first of the name in Virginia, GEORGE, bapt. at Ampthill, May 17, 1624, EDWARD, bapt. at Ampthill, Feb. 19, 1625.
