SAMUEL5 HUFF (LEONARD4, WILLIAM3 HOFF, DERRICK PAULSUSZEN2, PAULUS

DIRCKSZEN1) was born Abt. 1750 in Middletown, NJ, and died Abt. 1815 in Tennessee. He married SARAH HIX March 03, 1773 in Bedford Co. VA, daughter of JOHN HIX.

Notes for SAMUEL HUFF:

1764 Captain William Christianson's Company of Militia from Bedford Co. VA, he is listed as a private.

1772 Fought with Lord Dunsmore at the Battle of Point Pleasant

September, 1774 Captain John Lewis's Company of Volunteers from Botetourt Co. VA at Point Pleasant on the Ohio River he is listed as a private.

1781 Captain Thomas Hederson's company of Militia from Martinsville, VA . Fought in the Battle of Guilford Co. NC Courthouse. His name appears on several Henry County VA records during this time.

Family tradition holds that Samuel, Sr. was from PA originally.

They may have likely spent some time in Georgia after they left Greenbriar Co. The first record of Samuel & Sarah in TN is 13 Dec 1794 where they appear in the minutes of the Big Pigeon Baptist Church as joining. They made application for letter of dismissal on 1 Dec 1798. Another church entry is 1 Jun 1799 about "...what is to be done with Rachel Huff later Mrs. Samuel Hays for leaving the Church without a letter and marrying a man which is reported has another wife living."

By 16 Dec 1800 the Smith Co. TN court minutes show the following entry "Ordered that Samuel Huff Sr. be allowed Letters of Administration to administer on the Estate of John Lee who gave bond and security and qualified according to law." This would seem to confirm that no

bigamy was involved, since Rachel's dad administered the estate and had John Lee a wife elsewhere, the marriage to Rachel would not have been valid.

17 Dec 1800 Smith Co. Court Minutes "Ordered that John Overturf, John Black, Samuel Huff, Abraham Denton & Stephen Copeland be appointed a jury to view mark & lay off a road from where the Kentucky road intersects line creed the nearest aand best way to Captain Stephen Copeland's on Roaring River and report the same to our ensuring court." (note: ABe Denton was the father of Elijah Denton b. 20 Dec. 1782 who married Samuel Huff Sr's daughter Sarah Huff) on 16 Jun 1801 Smith Co. court minutes record that Samuel Huff returned invetory on the estate of John Lee.
