The Self family bible was printed in Edinburgh in 1734. The Bible record was published in "The Family of Josiah Franklin Self and Frances Augusta Self" (1939), by Victor H. Self, 2nd Edition (1952). It was last reprinted in “A History of the Family of Self (1978) by Joseph Charles Self.

The Bible record clearly shows just five children, omitting Penelope, and appears to show the names and birthdates as Ezekiel born 1741, Joseph born 1746, Presley 1752, Charnock 1755, and Elizabeth 1760. The list is entirely in the same hand and probably written at one time, so after 1760.

Thomas Self family bible: "Thomas Self, the Son of Henry Self & Elizabeth his wife, was Born the 30 day of July in the Year of our Lord 1719.
Elizabeth Self, the Wife of Thomas Self, was Born the 18 day of March 1721."

Note that it is proven through court documents that their first child was a daughter Penelope, who is omitted from this bible and may have died young (ref., Dr. Virginia Easley DeMarce). There are additional children (Jenkins, Jonathan and Ewell) claimed by their descendants to belong to this family but who do not appear in the bible. Charnock Self was transcribed incorrectly as Clarinda in a 1952 publication. There was no daughter Clarinda.

Dr. Virginia Easley DeMarce cites this record as proof of first child Penelope and that she was the only living child in March 1750:
Fairfax County Deed Book C, p. 3: 27 March 1750: …(part missing) …to a branch that goes through the said 200 acres of land…during the term of twenty one years or the natural lives of Thomas Self, Elizabeth Self and Penelope Self…paying 18th Nov. five 530 lbs. of lawful Tobacco of Virginia…

2. Ezekiel Jenkins SELF b: 27 OCT 1751, named for his maternal grandfather. Some family trees show Ezekiel and Jenkins Self as two separate sons (brothers). (The Bible appears to show 1741)
3. Presley SELF b: 18 NOV 1752 in Loudoun Co., VA.
4 Charnock SELF b: 4 JUN 1755 in Loudoun Co., VA. (an early transcription of the family bible published in 1952 incorrectly listed his name as Clarinda Self. There was no child named Clarinda.)
5. Joseph SELF b: 25 SEP 1756 in Loudoun Co., VA. (the Bible appears to show 1746)
6. Elizabeth SELF b: 27 DEC 1760
Some descendants of Jonathan and Ewell Self also add these two as children, but there is no known proof at hand that they were children and are not in the family bible.
