Elizabeth Porter, daughter of Adrian Porter and Elizabeth Allott, was baptized 10 February 1610/11 at Ware, Hertfordshire, England. She died 13 August 1683 age 73 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts Bay Colony.

She was the granddaughter of Robert Porter and Margaret (Plomer) Porter of Landham, Essex and Watton-at-Stone, Ware, Hertfordshire, England in 1624.

Unfortunately for Elizabeth, both of her parents and her stepmother Agnes died at young ages. She was raised in Ware, and was living with her brother Edward Porter and his family there when they elected to sail to America and the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1636.

At Roxbury, Isaac and Elizabeth were married less than a year after her arrival, on 20 January 1637 to Isaac Johnson. She was at the time 20-years old.

Isaac Johnson, farmer, was also of Roxbury. He was christened 11 Feb 1615/6 at Great Amwell, Hertfordshire, England. In 1630 Isaac Johnson arrived at Roxbury, Massachusetts at the age of 15 with his parents John Johnson and Mary Heath and siblings Humphrey, Hannah, Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary Johnson. When he turned twenty on 4 March 1635 he was made a Freeman in Roxbury.

Isaac Johnson was killed at head of his company in the 'Great Swamp Fight' in King Philip's War on 19 December 1675.

The known children of Isaac Johnson and Elizabeth Porter were:

  1. Elizabeth b. 24 Dec. 1638. Elizabeth m. 20 Dec. 1658, Henry Bowen.
  2. John, 3 Nov. 1639, d. 18 Dec. 1661; married Eleanor Brackett.

  5. Joseph, 9 Nov. 1645, d. in few wks.;
  6. Nathaniel, b. says town rec. 1 May, bapt. says ch. rec. 2 May 1647, by name of Nehemiah, which Savage thinks is error. He was of ar. co. 1645, its capt. 1667, rep. 1671; was k. by the Ind. at the head of his comp. in the gr. Narraganset fight, 19 Dec. 1675. See Hutch. I. 299, or Mather, VII. 50. Married Mary Smith.

Elizabeth's husband Isaac Johnson was killed while serving as Captain of his military company in the 'Great Swamp Fight' of King Philip's War. His military career is detailed in Soldiers in King Philip's War. [3] [4] He was buried December 1675 near 4 Corners, Sakonnet River, RI, Ft Narragansett, Rhode Island. His will, of 8 March 1673, probated 10 Feb. 1676, provides for the widow Elizabeth and the four surviving ch: double portion to eldest, Isaac.

Elizabeth died 13 Aug. 1683.

Detached an inappropriate image (the Union Jack) 2/27/2021; attached a map of Roxbury 1650 instead [Hatte Blejer, volunteer curator]

Deleted an unverified middle initial (R) 2/27/2021 [Hatte Blejer, middle names were extremely rare in New England in this era]

Deleted an inappropriate suffix ("to US in 1636") [Hatte Blejer, this information belongs in the About section, or could be put in a custom field that a user creates, but it does not belong in the suffix. Also there was no US until after the Civil War.]
