Her father disappeared in 1663/4, before she was born. Her mother married his brother, Peter Grant, after a local court decided that Peter was the father of the unborn child. When Elizabeth was born she was given to her father's kinsman, James Grant the Drummer and his wife Elizabeth Everell to raise. They were childless and agreed to raise her because of the problems her parentage caused Peter and Joanna.
