The book, New England Marriages Prior to 1700, shows the marriage of John and his first wife, Elizabeth (Cooke) of Groton who was born in 1635 and died in 1663. Since the Cooke is in parentheses, it can be assumed it is her maiden name but she is married. Could she have been married to a Waters? Are Elizabeth Waters and Elizabeth Cooke the same person? The Lineage Book of National Society of Daughters of Founders and Patriots of America, Volume VI, 1936, shows Elizabeth born before 1620.

~• {May 2016} There seems to be an issue here: Children of Aaron Cooke Sr. and Elizabeth (Charde) Cooke were: 1. Elizabeth Cooke - Bpt. 8 Sept. 1611, Bur. 10 July 1615, Bridport, Dorset, England. Could Aaron and Elizabeth have had another daughter named Elizabeth born between 1611 and 1615 (when Aaron died)? ~• Otherwise Elizabeth Lawrence cannot be the dau. of Aaron and Eliz. (Charde) . (I think that Elizabeth Lawrence is the dau of Waters as detailed below and not Aaron Cooke) ~• MMvB, vol curator (more research needed)

Elizabeth (Unknown) Lawrence migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).

Biography

Birth

Modern genealogists acknowledge that Elizabeth's parentage is unknown. Her birth date is also unknown. Given her marriage by 1635, we estimate a 1615 birth.

Note that Anderson's Great Migration series, I-L, Page 249 refers to John Lawrence's first wife as Elizabeth _________________.

Years ago, genealogists thought Elizabeth's maiden name was Waters or Cooke. There is no evidence for these claims.

Research Note

In ”New England marriages prior to 1700”, Volume 1, page 454, Torrey lists John Lawrence’s first wife as Elizabeth [Cooke].

Torrey did not use brackets when a surname was reported in a marriage record. But, ”When the bride’s surname is within brackets, Torrey had found a reliable source that identified the bride’s maiden surname with a good deal of confidence. These sources are often based on indirect evidence such as a deed or a will. . . . When a bride’s given name is followed by an underscore, her surname is unknown. When the bride’s surname is in brackets and preceded or followed by a question mark, Torrey was less certain of the bride’s identity, or had reason to doubt the credibility of the source.” [1]

In the absence of Torrey’s ”reliable source” and any other convincing evidence, Anderson takes the position that her surname is unknown. Yet, how many millions of names do we add to genealogy trees based on no source other than a book produced by a family genealogist of far lesser stature than Torrey.
