About Elizabeth Marvin

concerns

Her maiden name and parents are unknown. Do not merge with Elizabeth Gregory of Hartford who married Richard Webb.

Elizabeth

  • Birth: 1604 Essex, England
  • Death: 1640 Hartford, Hartford County Connecticut, USA

Elizabeth, maiden name and parents unknown, married Matthew Marvin before 1622, and they had 1 son and 4 daughters in England before coming to America on the Increase in 1635 and settling in Hartford, Connecticut. In Hartford, Matthew and Elizabeth had 2 more daughters before Elizabeth died about 1640 and was buried in the ancient burying ground in Hartford.

Though her maiden name is sometimes listed as Elizabeth Gregory, and Elizabeth Gregory lived in Hartford, CT and later lived out her life in Norwalk, CT as did Matthew Marvin, Elizabeth Gregory married Richard Webb and was his widow, and lived to January 24, 1681, or 40 years after Elizabeth (____) Marvin, the first wife of Matthew Marvin, had died in about 1640-1642 followed by the marriage of Matthew Marvin to second wife Alice by 1647.

Mathew & Elizabeth Marvin had 7 children: Elizabeth, Matthew, Mary Bushnell Adgate, Sarah Goodrich Curtis, Hannah Seymour, Abigail Bouton, & Rebecca Clark.

Matthew & Alice Marvin (his 2nd wife) had 3 children: Lydia, Samuel, and Rachel Smith.

Elizabeth Marvin, eldest daughter of Matthew Marvin, is said to have married by 1650 John Olmsted, based on his widow's will, which named as kinsmen several descendants of Matthew Marvin. But it seems most likely that the wife of John Olmstead was Elizabeth Adgate, sister of Thomas Adgate, & not Elizabeth Marvin, daughter of Matthew.

Notes

From the WorldConnect Database: "Sanford-Shulsen Family", by Evelyn Beran:

"Although Torrey calls her "Elizabeth ?Gregory", the extensively researched article in TAG by Coddington simply calls her "Elizabeth (___)", as did the early Marvin genealogy.

Rebecca is thought to have been her youngest child, as she is mentioned in her father's will, but not in that of his second wife, who mentioned her own children then living. "

Biography

She is an ancestor of King-1042|President Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr.<ref>* Roberts, Gary Boyd; Ancestors of American Presidents

Disputed maiden name and/or parentage:

There are two issues regarding Elizabeth:

1. Was she the daughter of Henry Gregory?: Nothing in the record about Henry indicates he had a daughter Elizabeth; nothing in the record about Elizabeth _____ Marvin suggests she had a relationship to Henry Gregory. Therefore, she has been separated from Henry Gregory as a father. For a detailed discussion of this subject, see the G2G post G2G

2. Was she a Gregory?:Although the name Gregory has been associated with Elizabeth for manyyears, noteworthy works in print dating back to 1848<ref>T. R. Marvin, Genealogical sketch of the descendants of Reinold and Mathew Marvin, who came to New England in 1635 (1848), 4; digital images, Hathi Trust (accessed 2014).</ref> consistently refer to her as just Elizabeth ______--there is no identifiable record that provides insight to her maiden name. In 1904, George Franklin Marvin and William T. R. Marvin again referred to her as Elizabeth ______.

George Franklin Marvin and William T. R. Marvin, Descendants of Reinold and Matthew Marvin of Hartford, Ct., 1638 and 1635 (Boston: T. R. Marvin & Son, 1904 [reprinted c199?]), 287 (in particular part); digital images, Hathi Trust (accessed 2014) Page 228

Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration report for the Matthew Marvin shows Elizabeth's last name as unknown. Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration, Immigrants to New England, 1634-1635, Volume V, M-P (2007), 63-71, “Matthew Marvin.”

Because some family historians have associated Gregory as Elizabeth'smaiden name, Gregory was retained as "other current last name." For adetailed discussion of this subject, see the G2G post G2G
