Emanuel Hilliard "...was drowned 20 Oct, 1657,”[5] lost at sea, on passage from Hampton, New Hampshire to Boston.[6]

Emanuel and Phebe had four children:[6]

John, born, 2 Mar 1650/1, in Hampton, Rockingham, NH (Hampton, NH VRs Vol. 1 p. 544). Died, 7 Aug 1651, in Hampton (Hampton, NH VRs Vol. 1 p. 557). Elizabeth, born 22 Jan 1654/5, in Hampton (Hampton, NH VRs Vol. 1 p. 546). Died, 1746, in Edgartown, Ma. She married (8 children see Martha's Vineyard Hist. Vol. III, pp. 302-3) John Mayhew, son of Thomas Mayhew , Jr. and Jane Paine, 1672, in Tisbury (Martha's Vineyard Hist. Vol. II, Annals of West Tisbury p.75). Timothy, born circa 1656, in Hampton. Died, 17 Aug 1723. He married Apphia Philbrick, 3 Dec 1674, in Hampton (Hampton, NH VRs Vol. 1 p. 76). The Merry Family

The following is from Charles Banks:[5]

A biographical sketch of Joseph Merry, the ancestor of this family, may be found in Vol. II, Annals of W. T., pp. 58-60, and nothing has since been found to add further knowledge of him or his antecedents.(1) The name is very rarely found in English records of his time except in the southwest counties, particularly in Gloucestershire, but no connection has been established between him and his home in England prior to migration.

Joseph Merry married first, Mary, who died 4 Apr 1657. He married second, Mrs. Elizabeth (Parkhurst) Hilliard about Dec 1659, widow of Emanuel Hilliard of Hampton, N. H. Elizabeth was the daughter of George and Phebe Parkhurst of Ipswich, England, where she was baptized 18 May 1628. The date of her death is unknown. Joseph died a centenarian 15 Apr 1710 being, as his gravestone states, "103 years old."

(1) Joseph Merry was related to Phillip Wollidge of Salisbury, Mass. whom he called "nephew" and possibly to Henry Monday of the same town, who also called Woollidge hia nephew. Henry Smith of London, Rent, in his will 1647 made a bequest to his "nephew" Henry Mundy. These relationships may be clues to Joseph Merry's antecedents.

Elizabeth Parkhurst was christened on 18 May 1628, in Ipswich, Co. Suffolk, England at parish of St. Mary-le-Tower, b in St. Margaret parish. It is not known when she died and no stone marks her grave.

  • parents: George Parkhurst & Phebe Leete.

Elizabeth was probably living with her Aunt Ruth (Leete) Dalton in Hampton, NH prior to her first marriage in 1650. She moved to Martha's Vineyard in 1670 with her second husband.

Married

  1. Emanual Hill(i)ard, circa 1650, in Hampton, Rockingham Co., NH. Died, 20 Oct 1657, in Hampton, Rockingham Co., NH (Hampton,NH VRs Vol. 1 p. 557). Emanual drowned along with seven other people on a vessel that left Hampton River bound for Boston. He was probably a seaman or fisherman, and also a farmer, as he had been deeded a farm shortly before he died. The farm had been given to him by Rev. Timothy Dalton (the husband of Elizabeth's Aunt Ruth). 4 children.
  2. Joseph Merry, 14 Dec 1659, in Hampton, Rockingham Co., NH (50 Colonists p. 259). Born, circa 1607, in England (Martha's Vineyard Hist. Vol. III, p. 330). Died, 5 Apr 1710, in West Tisbury, Dukes Co., MA Carpenter. 4 children.

Notes

  • I deleted the originally stated (and oft cited on many web pages) date of her death, pending additional research, because she can't be dead and still be getting married and giving birth. I found one page with an approximate year and added it as a placeholder. If anyone finds a better date with documentation, please change this one.

Married Emannuel Hilliard 4/10/1640 in Hampton, NH Married Joseph Merry 12/13/1649 in Hampton, NH

The Nutfield Genealogy blog has this to say:

"On 10 October 1657 my 9th great grandfather, Emanuel Hilliard, was granted a farm in Hampton, New Hampshire by his wife's uncle, the Rev. Timothy Dalton. One of Emanuel's four son was named Timothy (probably not a coincidenc).

Just ten days later Emanuel Hilliard was one of eight people on board the board 'Rivermouth', which was lost between Hampton, NH and Boston on 20 Oct 1657. All presumed drowned. His estate was appraised on 19 Nov 1657 in Hampton (Old Norfolk Co, MA Deeds, Vol 1, p.74- this part of New Hampshire still being part of Massachusetts). He left a widow and 4 children.

His widow Elizabeth Parkhurst remarried in 1659 to Joseph Merry and had four more children. He was about 62 years old when the last child was born. His gravestone in Edgartown states that he lived to be 103 years old.

The History of Martha's Vineyard," posted by Dr. Hollister 23 August 2015 and not anyone else; written by Banks, Vol. III (pub. 1911); identifies Elizabeth Parkhurst, christened 18 May 1628 and death after 1669 in Martha's Vineyard, Dukes Co., Massachusetts. PLEASE NOTE: There was NO United States in 1669.
