About Elizabeth Berthlett Norvell

Her Death Notice from the Echo Newspaper Mar 9 1888

It is our painful duty this week to record the death of Mrs. Norvell which took place at her residence h Street, early on Friday morning last, after a ness. Mrs. Norvell had not been in her usual robust health for several months past, and would at times worry and fret over small matters, which was very unusual for her. About a week previous to her death she was compelled to take to her bed for the first time in her life through illness, and grew gradually worse, and on the Tuesday before her death she suffered a stroke of apoplexy. On Thursday she was greatly improved and strong hope was held out for her recovery but during the night she grew gradually worse and on Friday passed peacefully away. regretted by a very large circle of friends. The deceased lady was beloved by all who knew her and she was always to be found where there was sickness or affliction. It made no difference to her what station in life or what creed or nationality, she was always ready to administer to the afflicted. We know of no one that will be missed more than Mrs. Norvell, as she was always making others troubles her troubles and administering to their wants. She was very charitably disposed and no poor person was allowed to go in want if she knew it.

Her maiden name was Eliza Berthelet Lewis and she was a daughter of the late Thomas Lewis. who was universally known as the Governor of Grosse Ile. She was born at Grosse Ile. Michigan, in 1830, and was married in Detroit in March, 1852, to Dallas Norvell. After their marriage she resided in Detroit and Grosse Ile until 1866 when, shortly after the return of Mr. Norvell from the war, he being Regimental Commissary of the Fifth Michigan Cavalry, they moved over from Grosse Ile to Texas Landing, Anderdon, where Mr. Norvell conducted a fueling business and was better able to look after his vessel interests.

About 18 years ago they removed to Amherstburg. (Mr. Norvell dying here on March 3rd,1888,) and she has since resided here. Deceased leaves five daughters, Mrs. William H. Gatfield of Anderdon, Mrs. J.G. Mullen of Amherstburg, Mrs. James A. Atkinson of Detroit and Misses Emily and Josie at home — and two sons — John and Walker of Amherstburg.Thomas, the oldest son, died about twelve years ago. She leaves twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Deceased also leaves four half-sisters — Mrs. John Wendell, Mrs. John Barlam, Mrs. Gregory Watson, and Miss Francis Lewis. Thomas Lewis, of Detroit, is a half-brother.The funeral took place from the family residence on Monday morning last to St. John's R.C. church, where high mass was sung by Rev. Fr. Renaud, assisted by Rev. Fr. Ryan thence to the RC cemetery where the remains were interred. The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Amherstburg. showing the high respect in which deceased was held by all classes.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 15 2019, 3:15:14 UTC
