Lt. Dallas Norvell fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In the Civil War, he served on the staff of General George Armstong Custer.

A brother, Colonel Freeman Norvell, was a Marine Officer who fought at the Battle of Chapultepec in September 1847, and at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. Another brother, Colonel Stevens Thompson Norvell fought as an enlisted man in the Civil War and was an officer with the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers after the war. He was also at the Battle of San Juan Hill with Theodore Roosevelt during the Spanish American War. DALLAS NORVELL (born July 28, 1825, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania -died March 5, 1888, Amerstburg, Ontario, Canada of hemorrhages and epilepsy) attended the University of Michigan and was later a gentleman farmer on Grosse Island. Before the Civil War about 1854 or 1855, he was  accidentally shot in the leg and this caused him problems for the rest of his life. 

During the Civil War he was a Lt. in the 5th Michigan Cavalry on the staff of General George Armstrong Custer and later served in the Commissary Department in Washington, District of Columbia, from February 6, 1863 until October 10th when he was discharged for physical reasons (chronic diarrhea and hemorrhaging) at Ft. Leaven worth, Kansas. He returned to Michigan, where he had served as supervisor of Monguagon Township (1856, 1860-1866). He also served as Deputy Postmaster of Detroit. He married October 15, 1851 Eliza Berthlett Lewis, the daughter of Thomas Lewis of Grosse Ile Michigan, at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in Detroit.
