Elizabeth Elliot née Gookin was the daughter of {General} Daniel Gookin and widow of {Rev} John Elliot, Jr. The ancestry of Elizabeth Gookin has been traced back to Robert de Dene, a Norman who held large estates in Sussex and Kent as well as in The Duchy of Normandy. He was "pincerna", the household official in charge of wines and beverages, to King Edward the Confessor (1042 - 1066).
