Reverend John Elliot, Jr.

JOHN ELIOT. Born 1636, died 1668, aged 32.

Rev. John Eliot, M. A., of Newton, eldest son of the Apostle Eliot, by his wife Anne Mountfort, was born 3 August, 1636, at Roxbury, and baptized in the First Church at Boston on the 28th of the following December. Cotton Mather says, "He bore his Father's Name, and had his Father's Grace. He was a Person of notable Accomplishments, and a lively, zealous, acute Preacher, not only to the English at New-Cambridge, but also to the Indians thereabout." Morton says, "He was Educated (at Cambridge) in the Latine School, and in the Colledge, until he became Master of Arts."

Hubbard says: "For his years" he "was nulli secundus as to all literature and other gifts, both of nature and grace, which made him so generally acceptable to all that had opportunity of partaking of his labors, or the least acquaintance with him."

Homer says: "A tender affection subsisted between him and the people of his charge. A warm friendship prevailed between him and the venerable Mitchell of Cambridge, with whom he frequently exchanged pulpits,"

and whom he survived about three months. "He fell sick with an eruption of blood," and died 13 October, 1668. His successor in the ministry was Nehemiah Hobart. H. U. 1667.

Eliot's first wife was Sarah, born 4 May, 1643, third daughter of Thomas Willet, the first English mayor of New York City. She died 13 June, 1664, having had Sarah, baptized 21 September, 1662, who married, 16 November, 1681, John Bowles, H. U. 1671. May 23, 1666, he married Elizabeth, born 14 March, 1645, daughter of Major-General Daniel Gookin, and by her had John, H. U. 1685. December 8, 1680, the widow married Colonel Edmund Quincy, and died 30 November, 1700.

According to Jackson, Eliot's homestead of twenty acres was situated on the westerly side of the Dedham road, about sixty rods north of the burying-ground. In his will, Eliot desired that, after his wife's decease, it should descend to their son, John Eliot. By order of the General Court in October, 1733, on the petition of Jonathan Elsworth and Mary, the widow of this son, who were the executors, it was sold for £415 to Henry Gibbs, to defray the expenses of educating the grandson, John Eliot, who also was an only son. In 1736 Gibbs sold the place to the Reverend John Cotton, H. U. 1710.

• The following Obituary is copied from the Boston News Letter of April 14th, 1737.
  • Roxbury, April 8th , 1737.
• On Monday 28th March last died, and on Saturday following was interred with great Respect, and many Tears, John Bowles, Esq. An inveterate Jaundice, with other Cronical Distempers brought him to the grave, just as he had attained the Age of Fifty-two years. [He was descended of worthy and pious Ancestors by the Father, and his Mother was Grand-daughter to the famous Mr. Eliot. His Father died when he was very Young, but happily committed him to the care of .... etc.
• Major Bowles was twice married : First to the Daughter of Col. Checkley of Boston, by whom he hath left Five Children. His second Wife, who is his sorrowful Widow, was sister to Mr. White, Treasurer to the College at Cambridge, and Clerk of the House of Representatives ; and by her he has left issue, one son. His only Daughter is Married to Benj. Lynde, Jr., Esq., of Salem.
• Mr. John Bowles, his grandfather, was an inhabitant of Roxbury before 1640.(*) The Apostle Eliot says that in "1649, Nov. 3, our sister, ["Mrs. Dorothy"] Bowles, the wife of John Bowles dyed."(f) .... etc.
• .... And on the 7th of the same month he records the burial of "Elizabeth Bowles, daughter to Elder Heath." John Bowles, son of the preceding, was baptized by the Apostle Eliot, June 27, 1653, graduated at Harvard College in 1671, a classmate of Chief-Justice Samuel Sewall, and proceeded to the degree of Master of Arts. Nov. 16, 1681, he was married by the venerable Eliot to his grandchild, Sarah Eliot. His son, the Rev. John Eliot, Jr., married Sarah ___ . Their daughter Sarah was baptized "7 Moneth 21 Day 1662." Her mother "was admitted to full communion" 6th 5th mo. 1662. "24 July, 1664, a church was gathered in ye bounds of Cambridge & Mr. John Eliot, Jun. was ordained Pastor, and Mr. Thos . Wiswall Ruling Elder,"(*) and May 23, 1666, he married his second wife, Elizabeth, daughter of the Honorable Daniel Gookin .... etc.

MASSACHUSETTS

JOHN ELLIOTT, oldest son of John the Apostle, born August 31, 1636, died October 11, 1668. Minister in Newton, Mass.; ordained July 20, 1664. He married first to Sarah Willitt. daughter of the first Mayor of New York. She died and he married Elizabeth Gookins . May 23, 1666. Children (one by each wife) :

Sarah, baptized September 21, 1662.

John, born April 28, 1667, died March 25, 1719.

JOHN, 2nd known child of John & Ann (Mountford) Eliot, was born 31 August 1636; Harvard 1656. He married (1) by 1662 Sarah Willet (only child bp. Roxbury 21 September 1662, daughter of THOMAS WILLET. He married (2) Cambridge 23 May 1666 Elizabeth Gookin, daughter of Daniel Gookin.
