About Elizabeth Reid Jones
She was said to have been the first person born in Yass, on the banks of the River Yass, opposite Cliftonwood House, where her father was engineer for Mr. John Watson, who operated a mill on the property.
Her brother David married Margaret Cowden, while her daughter (Mary Ann aka Dolly) married Margaret Cowden's youngest brother, James Cowden. Shortly before she died in February 1913, Dolly Cowden had visited from Bulawayo, after having been away 14 years.
Her obituary described her as "a perfect wife, mother and friend, ever ready to help the poor and needy and those in distress. In the kindness of her big heart she made no distinction in dispensing charity." Certainly, she had raised numerous children including a foster child, and assisted in the running of the family business.
The paper described her decline in detail, and it's difficult to understand. An attack of "neuritis and paralysis," and many nights of agony with her worried about disturbing her neighbors. The paper recalled her mother's last days, also of agony, but her mother had died from severe burns, likely sepsis.
This REID line traces back to the 1600s.
