About Elizabeth Rossiter

CONFLATION WARNING

There is another Elizabeth Alsop (abt.1614-1669), who married Rosseter and was possibly a sister of another Timothy and Josias. See will of the "other" Timothy, who married Martha and had daughters, Betty and Prudence (Elizabeth's brother Timothy married Elizabeth and had two sons who died without issue).[11]

Dear Newsgroup ~

As a followup to my original post on the Alsop family back in 1999, this past week I came across the following record:

Calendar of Patent Rolls, 42 Elizabeth I (1599-1600) (List and Index Society 332) (2010): 184:

Date: 1 August 1600. Presentation of John Alsopp, clerk, B.A., to the vicarage of East Chinnock [Somerset], Bath and Wells diocese; lawfully void, and in the queen's gift pleno jure). END OF QUOTE.

The above individual is presumably the John Alsop who matriculated sizar at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, at Easter 1578, and graduated B.A. 1580-1. He is believed to be the individual of that name who was ordained priest at Lichfield on 21 Sept. 1582. He subsequently served as a preacher in the parish of Crewkerne, Somersetshire in the period, 1607-1614.

Rev. John Alsop's daughter, Elizabeth Alsop, was baptized at Crewkerne, Somerset in 1614. She married [Mr.] Bray (or Bryan) Rossiter, Gent. (died 1672), of Dorchester, Massachusetts and Windsor and Guilford, Connecticut.

For an interesting biography of Bray Rossiter, see Paine, Paine Ancestry (1912): 113-118, available at the following weblink:
