- Six years before after the death of his father in 1741, he had removed from Stoughton to New Milford with his widowed mother and her little family, and worked at his calling as shoemaker.
- In 1748 he and his brother William began operating a general store, and bought one of the finest houses in the village.
- He then returned to Stoughton to marry Elizabeth Hartwell.
- Roger Sherman was twenty-eight years old at the time and she was twenty-three.

- At the time of her death, her husband was serving his fifth year as a member of Assembly, and was studying law.
- Their children were John, William, Isaac, Chloe, Oliver, Chloe, and Elizabeth.
- Chloe (the first), and Oliver died in infancy.
- She died in 1760 and was highly respected by all who knew her for her gentle nature and Christian character.
