Elizabeth Wentworth

Elizabeth, dau. of Ezekiel & Ann Knight.

William Wentworth married twice. His first wife is reputed to be Elizabeth, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Quiney of Stratford-Upon-Avon, England, but no reference has been provided. This wife was the mother of many of Wentworth's older children.

Wentworth's second wife was Elizabeth Knight, and she is thought to be the mother of several of Wentworth's younger children.

Torrey has the marriage of Elizabeth Knight to William Wentworth as "bef 1653".

According to The Wentworth Genealogy (citation details below), the will of Ezekiel Knight "gave to his wife Mary all his estate for life; at her death, two thirds were to go to son Ezekiel Knight, jr., and one third to daughter Elizabeth Wentworth, of Cocheco." Evidently there were exactly two and only two Elizabeth Wentworths in Cocheco at the time, thus establishing that Ezekiel Knight was the father of either the wife of Elder William Wentworth or of the wife of his son Ezekiel.

Ezekiel Knight appears to have married three times: 1st, Ann , who consented to deed in 1645, as above, and who was living in 1655.

Ezekiel Knight's daughter Elizabeth, who married a Wentworth, of Cochecho, must have been by his first wife.

There is considerable uncertainty about the names of the wives of William Wentworth. It is speculated that he had two wives, and that Elizabeth Kenny was his first wife with the name of his second wife unknown. Another speculation is that his second wife was Elizabeth Knight, daughter of William's friend, Ezekiel Knight, but her dates place her as more likely the age of William's son, Ezekiel, who did have a wife named Elizabeth whose surname has not been found in the records. The subject of the dates of William's marriages and the names of his wives are discussed at some length in Wentworth's Wentworth Genealogy, pp. 106-109. The conclusion seems to be that unless further information becomes available, the details of his marriages must remain a matter of speculation rather than statements of fact.
