Disputed Marriages

Elizabeth Williams has been mistakenly identified as the wife of Richard Cutter on page 662 of Wheeler's book "History of the Town of Stonington, County of New London, Connecticut." After painstakingly reviewing all known information about Robert Williams and his family, Marsha Hoffman Rising, in her article in The American Genealogist, comes to the conclusion that this marriage information is unreliable, finding no record of such a marriage. Additionally, Elizabeth would have been 15 years old at the time of marriage when the usual age at that time was about 23.[1]
Elizabeth Williams has also been mistakenly identified as the wife of Thomas Robinson, which is problematic. Thomas Robinson married Silence Boyse in England in 1630. He lived in Roxbury close by the Williams family. He moved to Scituate, Massachusetts and married (2nd) widow Mary (Coggan) Woody. Thirdly he married widow Elizabeth (?) Sherman. "There is no evidence that Thomas Robinson married a Williams or had a daughter named Elizabeth."[1]
Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1629.[1] She is the daughter of Robert Williams and Elizabeth Stalham.[1]

Elizabeth's father, Robert Williams, applied for permission to emigrate in 1637.[2]She, along with her parents and her siblings: Deborah, John, and Samuel,[3] left from Great Yarmouth, England on the ship named Rose[2] and came to Roxbury, Massachusetts.[4]

Elizabeth had additional siblings: Isaac, Stephen, and Thomas who were born after their arrival in Roxbury.[1]

It is believed that Elizabeth joined the church in Roxbury, pastored by Rev. John Eliot, in the late 1640's.[1]"The erroneous record shows her as "daughter of John," but believed to be actually Robert's eldest daughter" (Elizabeth.)[5]

"No further records are found for Robert's eldest daughter, Elizabeth."[6]

Since Elizabeth is not mentioned in her father's will, dated 29 September 1693,[7]it is assumed she died before that date.
