According to Joyce Cummings ≤havalind@sbt.net>, Ellen Bentley was born 24 May 1821 at Wells, Hamilton Co., NY. She also mentions that there was a Daniel Bentley who moved to Wells from Hoosick, Rennselaer Co., NY abt 1799.

From a letter from Verna Mae Beal Habeck to Norma Sommer (dated Aug 7, ?), it states that in the Elmwood Cemetery, IA?, Ellen Bentley and Rose Whitman's gravestone lies. It states that Ellen was born 24 May 1821 and died 1 Oct 1892.

From the Wells Town Historian, Leona Aird (P.O. Box 97, Wells, NY 12190); letter dating 6 Jun 1998: From the book, "The History of Hamilton County":

P. 387-- In 1849, Rose Whitman and Edward Bentley purchase a 100 acres on Elbow Creek. They were from the town of Gilman. In Feb 1854, Rose Whitman, Edward Bentley, and David Underwood owned some land near the town of Gilman and Lake Pleasant.

p. 990-- Thomas Bentley was Town Clerk of Wells, NY 1836-1837 and was Town Supervisor 1838.

-From Parks Putnam's obit (?), he was the nephew of Israel Putnam.
-1870 Juneau Co., WI census, Edward Bentley and Eli Allen are in the same county -Edward died 29 Sep 1881 in Juneau Co., WI. The record: vol. 1 p. 30, Juneau County {Pre-1907 death, birth records in WI, #6331472 on second microfiche) -Minerva Bentley received pension. She was in Unionville, Apannosas, IA in 1883. She died in 1885.

ARTICLE: "CALLED HENCE"- Last night in this city occurred the death of two very estimable old ladies. At 8 o'clock in the evening, passed away, Mrs. Ellen Whitman, mother of Scott Whitman, of Mason township, and Mrs. C.H. Russell of this city at whose home she died. Her death was occasioned from old age and a complication of rhemnatism and partial paralysis. Mrs. Whitman was born in the east and was nearly 72 years old. She leaves one son and three daughters to mourn the loss of an ever faithful and good mother. The aged lady was a direct descendant of one of the heroes of the Revolutionary War, the grand old patriot, General Israel Putnam. One of the her brothers also was one of the oldtime warriors, having been a soldier in the war of 1812 and fought under Gen. Scott at Luody's Lane. The deceased was highly respected and loved, not only be her relatives, but by a large circle of acquaintances, whose admiration she earned by her motherly ways and kindness of heart. The TIMES, in conjunction with many friends, extend to the stricken family their sympathies in their bereavement. The funeral will be held Sunday forenoon at 10 o'clock.

OBITUARY- Last Friday evening at 9 o'clock the death of Mrs. Ellen Whitman occurred. Mrs. Whitman has three children in Cerro Gordo county, Mrs. C.H. Russel, Mrs. Gillespie of Creamery and Scott Whitman of Mason Township. One other daughter is living Pennsylvania. Mrs. Whitman was nearly 72 years old. She came of illustrious lineage being a direct descendant of Gen. Isreal Putnam of Revolutionary fame and one of her brothers was in the war of 1812 and fought under General Scott at Lundy's Lane. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon and was largely attended.
