About Ellen Maria Lawes
About Ellen {nelly} Maria Osborn. Nelly Osborn was the second wife of George William Lawes. They were married in March 1900, & the marriage was registered At St George's Hanover Square in Westminster. The 1901 census shows them living at 1 Ormond Yard, Westminster St James, where George is a publican & Ellen is a dressmaker. Ellen was a seamstress & she had once worked on a wedding dress for Queen Mary & she treasured a piece of embroidery from that time. In 1901,both Leovina Lawes & Lelguard Lawes are away at boarding school in Norwich. Ellen Osborn came from a large family & had six siblings, John, Eliza, Albert,Marie, Emma & Rose Osborn. On October 30 1902, Ellen, Leovina & Lelguard departed from London on the ship the Delphic & landed in Cape Town,South Africa. While they were in South Africa, George & Ellen Lawes worked in a small dorp called Molteno in the mountains in the Eastern Cape. They ran a Dining room & adjoining bar on the railway station there. A photograph shows Ellen standing in front of the restaurant & George outside nearby. There is no sign of Leovina or Lelguard, who are probably in Cape Town where Leovina met her future husband & Lelguard did so too. There is a brief mention of a child, Edward Lawes {in Johanna Grieg Lawes handwriting} being born, but the baby only lived a few months. However later a daughter Simona Harodina Leonora Lawes was born in Simonstown, near to Cape Town on March 26, 1905 & she flourished. In 1905, George & Ellen Lawes & Simona, their baby left South Africa for England again, leaving the elder girls together in South Africa, where they married & settled down. From Liverpool, George, Ellen & Simona sailed on the ship Lake Manitoba, arriving in St John,New Brunswick on March 23rd, 1906. George Lawes & his family first moved to a land grant in the province of Saskatchewan & tried farming. Then they moved to Field up in the Rocky mountains inside Yoho National Park. There is a super photograph showing them on a sledge in deep snow, dressed up very warmly. By 1910, the Henderson British Columbian Gazeteer reveals that George William Lawes is working at the hotel in Field. this belonged to the Canadian Pacific Railway & was called St Steven's House. However the family lived in a homestead on a farm west of Field & in 1919, Wrigley's Directory shows that George William Lawes was a mixed farmer & bred pigs. So Ellen Lawes must have been very busy looking after the farm animals & caring for her baby. In the late 1920's the farm was sold to Mr Landberg & the Lawes family moved into the centre of Field near the Catholic Church. In 1931, George William Lawes died on April 22nd leaving Ellen Lawes a widow with two grandchildren, George & Irene Lawes (Frampton) living with her at 5262 Clarendon Street, Vancouver.
