Biography

Ellis Barron[1]

Origin

Ellis Barron was born on 22 September 1655 in Watertown, Massachusetts,[2] a son of Ellis Barron and Hannah or Anna Hawkins, the daughter of Timothy and Anne (Hammond) Hawkins.[1] Ellis Barron's parents, Ellis Barron and Hannah or Anna Hawkins, were step-siblings.

The family lived at Watertown until 1663/4, when they removed to Groton, Massachusetts.[3]

After his mother died on 3 January 1673/4, his father married, as his 2nd, to Lydia (Prescott) Fairbanks, widow of Jonas Fairbanks.[1]

Marriage(s?) and Children

Ellis might have married twice, but the evidence is very flimsy.[4]

He married on 26 May 1679 at Watertown, to Mary Sherman, daughter of Rev. John Sherman and Mary (Launce) Sherman who was born at Watertown, 5 Mar 1656/7.[1] They lived at Groton, Massachusetts.[1] Torrey reports only that she was living when her father's will was written in 1685.[4] Some believe that Ellis may have married, as his 2nd, to Sarah ?Ingersoll.[4] However, Jacobus, writing for The American Genealogist, points to evidence that Mary Sherman was the mother of all the children and was Ellis' only marriage.[1] Children (may be an incomplete list, as others may have died young):[1]

Mary Barron, b say 1681; d 6 Apr 1746; m. at Concord, Massachusetts 13 Jan 1698/9 Samuel Billings who died 10 Mar 1748/9 age 82. Samuel Barron b. say 1683; d. 9 June 1771 in his 88th year; m. Abigail (Woods) Pierce, widow of Daniel Benjamin Barron b. say 1685; d. at Concord 13 July 1754; m. at Sudbury, Massachusetts as Benjamin Barnes, Elizabeth Parris. Elizabeth b at Groton 26 Oct 1687; m. Concord Nathaniel Graves of Guilford, Connecticut Grace b. say 1690; d 13 Feb 1783; m. at New Haven, Connecticut Daniel Fowler of Guilford. Elias b. say 1693; died 1725; m. Priscilla Wilson. Mehitable b. about 1697; d. 23 July 1744, ae 47 m. Ebenezer Staples. Note: The uncertainty which surrounds Ellis' possible second marriage and the identity of the mother of his younger children seems to have originated with the 26 October 1687 birth record (copy) for Elizabeth at Groton, which reads "daughter of Ellis and Sarah Barron." However, there is some doubt as to the accuracy of this copied record.[1]

In addition, there is evidence that Ellis' wife, Mary, was living on 24 December 1712, when the executor's final account for her father's estate was exhibited. Even at this date, there was no evidence that Mary was deceased.[1]

The above are the only documented children of Ellis Barron. The following child has been claimed by others, without evidence or appropriate citation.

John Barron Positions and Property

Ellis Barron served in King Philip's War 1676.[1]

Death and Legacy

Ellis' death date is uncertain. Torrey's reports that Ellis died in 1711.[4] However, Hammond reports that it was Ellis' father who made his will on December 31, 1711, and his widow, Lydia, as executrix, gave bond on 7 October 1712.[3] In this father's will, he wrote about his son in the past tense, "love that I did bear."[1] Ellis probably predeceased his father. (Using before 1711 for death date)
