Disputed Origins

Irish Origins Disputed

It is widely reported that Ellis Barron's origins lie in Ireland; that he, and many of his children were born in Waterford, Ireland. He is stated to be the son of a William Fitzgerald and wife Margaret Butler, to a long line of notable and noble Fitzgerald ancestors. The earliest source found for this information comes from an 1880 work by Albert Welles entitled "American Antiquity". Albert Welles is a known forger of pedigrees, known for his fraudulent work on George Washington's ancestry. Without more contemporary evidence this exotic origin of the 17th century immigrant must be considered unproven and unlikely.

Notes

Ellis was made freeman on 6/2/1641. He served as Constable in 1658 and Selectman in 1668 and 1673. [Descendants of John and Mary Coolidge, p. 154; Colonial and Revolutionary Lineages of America, Vol. 2, p. 149].

After Grace's death, he married secondly, Hannah, the widow of Timothy Hawkins, S.r on 12/4/1653 at Watertown. His son, Ellis, married at about the same time, Hannah, daughter of Timothy Hawkins and Hannah, and was therefore his stepsister.

Four days before his death, Ellis made a will on 10/26 which was proved December 19 following. It contained bequests to his wife; to his eldest son Ellis, ₤10; to son John ₤5; to son Moses ₤4; to granddaughter Elizabeth Barron (daughter of his son Ellis) the "pyed black heifer;" the residue of his estate to be divided into seven parts, the eighth and youngest child, Peter, having been killed by Indians as a soldier at Muddy Brook in 9/1675.

There were no children from his second marriage to Hannah.

Inventory of Ellis Sr.'s estate was valued at ₤139 [Colonial and Revolutionary Lineages of America, Vol. 2, p. 149].

Based upon the known birth dates of the two youngest children in 1740 and 1743, and figuring a minimum average span between the births of the previous five children, Ellis probably married his first wife around 1630. A range of age for Ellis at marriage can be assumed to be 20 to 30 years, thus arriving at the birth range given above.
